Fittled a pair of daytime running lights

Postby Wuey » Sun Jan 28, 2007 2:17 pm

Some years ago, someone shot out of an intersection in broad daylight, hit the rear quarter panel of my white Commodore rather viciously. My car spun 180 degrees, skidded sideway, the rear wheel hit the kerb and narrowly missed the lamp post. The other driver claimed she didn't see my car. Ever since that incident, I wanted to install a pair of DRL on my MX-5. Well here it is - a set of ADR approved low wattage but bright Hella kit.

To install the lights, I drilled a hole on each side of the metal brace that the tie-down hook used to attach to, and attached the light bracket there. At the rear of the passenger side engine compartment of my NA, there are two unused electrical plugs where I tapped the wires running to the relay. The DRL come on whenever the ignition is on. I can also tap into one of the plug terminals so that the DRL go off when the headlights are on. I choose to have them on irrespective of the headlights. Since they are low-wattage light, they just fickle but don't go off while I start the engine. The relay is fused so there is no need for an additional fuse.

if you did the front blinker mod your blinkers right now would be converted to lights about the same size. it would also get rid of the ugly orange in the light.

Benny, they're available from Autobarn for $125. I've seen heaps of cheap and ugly Chiwanese ones for less than $50. Most are around $70 but I think their lenses will fade over time.

Jules, the Hella meets ADR(Australian Design Rules) standards. As far as legality is concern, I'm taking a punt but so far so good. Vicroads stipulates that they must be off when the main lights come on. However we can see zillions of modern cars with extra and much bigger pair of extra driving lights operating along with the main lights these days. The cops should be rather used to them. Besides, they're not those obnoxiously annoying in-your-eyes blueish lights used by some of those boyz. It's no biggie to redo the wiring to comply. Just replug the wire to the next terminal as shown in the pic below.
