Jaycar Digital Air Fuel Display and GReddy eManage

Postby Boags » Mon Jan 22, 2007 1:41 pm

Howdy all...

Last weekend I went round to Uncle Arthurs house and began tinkering! With my ECU that is. I bought an eManage from a forumite late last year and finally got it in! Straight away I hit a brick wall. :frown: The car ran fine - so I must have cut and spliced the right wires - however, the emanage didn't want to communicate with my laptop, and didn't want to update or do anything really. We got it working for a few minutes on UAs laptop, but the data log feature wasn't logging rpm at all, so something was not reading right. As the car was running fine without the emanage doing anything, I left it for another day.

Several months back (September maybe) I bought the Jaycar Digital Air/Fuel Display and began building it. I can solder very well, and was finished in no time. Then came testing to see if it was working properly and then to calibrate it... Oh sheet. This is well beyond my heat and dab soldering experience, and was not possible. The kit then sat in my shed until this week.

I employed the service of a mate studying electronics, who was happy to work for beer (he's a student, what do you expect). He tested my handy work, calibrated it and then we tried to wire it all up.

Let me tell you that the stock O2 sensor takes a VERY long time to get up to temperature at idle... The temp gauge was well onto the scale (not at the middle yet) but I assumed this would be plenty hot enough to get proper readings from the O2 sensor. I was wrong. After swearing and recalibrating and wondering why it wasn't working, I started to get frustrated. I then took a reading from the engine bay side of the O2 wire (rather than at the ECU), which seemed a little better... I then went for a drive round the block, revving right through 1st and 2nd with the display plugged in to the O2 sensor, and ECU running off maps. Funnily enough, just down the road the numbers started making more sense (The sensor was coming up to temp)... Got back and plugged all back in and tapped the wire at the ecu and went for another drive. Perfect. By the time I got back and parked the car, the air/fuel display was oscillating from 14.6 up to 14.8 and then back again... 8) /Mr Burns voice *Excellent*...

Time to put it in it's nice box and mount it somewhere...

Great, so I drive around to PTs house (cuase SWMBO was out for dinner with the girls, and the roommate was with his) to show off the kit and ask for some help re laptops and the emanage.

The eManage has a serial 9 pin port on it (I had a 9pin to usb adaptor - which is what was playing up at UAs and stopping the damn thing from working!), which is somewhat like rocking horse sh!t, quite rare (note: non-existant on most modern computers). Luckily PT has a nice little Libretto...

Image

Like this but 10 years older!

After several hours of trying to get the emanage software onto it (no CD rom, no USB. Floppy Disk, ethernet (using a 10 year old ethernet card) or 56K modem... Don't have a usable dialup account :( ... Ethernet card too old to find anything anywhere... Right, we'll zip it and transfer it 1.4mb at a time. Tedious is an understatement. After several hours of reformatting disks which corrupted halfway through transfers I found out that the new version of zip is NOT compatible with Win95, and the version on there did not like the way the new version chopped up the file.   2 and a half hours gone.

Then, like a shining light, came Sabretooth. 8) He didn't relent until the bastard was on the internet (using his own newer ethernet card). Hooray! OK, now my ftp site isn't working, so we'll have to re-upload the files somewhere else. So Sabre CREATES an ftp client on his server and uploads the stuff. Runs downstairs and downloads it on the Libretto. 8) What a man! A MASSIVE thanks to Sabretooth and PT for all their help yesterday.

With the libretto the emanage updated and worked perfectly straight away. The rpm signal still wasn't working right though, so I will need to retap that wire to make sure it has a good connection.

Now they are both installed, I am going lean things off a little and try and find a few horsies!

Hopefully Sabretooth will see this thread and post up the pics he took last night.

Cheers,

Boags

You've learnt the first rule of laptop buying. My mate (who fixes and sells craptops for a living) rates laptops by their inclusion of a com port. No com port, no Aftermarket ECU access, laptop is crap. :)

Seriously hunt around for an older laptop that can run win98/XP, has a CD drive and a com port. Worth bugger all secondhand but worth there wait in gold when you want to tune cars.

Oh yes, I forgot to thank Fatty for his services! :P He helped with the troubleshooting while f*&^ing O2 sensor was still cold.

Fantastic write up Boagsy

I want to get into tuning ECUs as well. Lots of reading at the moment

Lucky for me that Link have a Com/USB adaptor...so I can plug into my ECU using USB via my adaptor.

Yep, that too! I did end up using the ignition wire to get home, but I haven't finished it yet. I'll make it all tidy and go around the back of the dash when I get to it.

One thing that was quite odd... When I turned on the lights to go home the air/fuel ratio got leaner on my display.  About 1 whole point... :?: Mental note, don't tune at night!

I have the adaptor too, but I couldn't get the damn computer to recognise it and use the right driver.

you cna't just have any adaptor.. you have to have one with a particular chip set in it similar to the ones that the nokia phones use to communicate with USB.

Read this on a forum somewhere ages ago. I think I have UA all the resources on this.

The forumite I bought the emanage from tuned his car using this cable. He sent it with the emanage for me, I just couldn't get it working...

Is the usb cable the genuine greddy one? Its chrome silver serial plug is a give away...some people have had problems data logging with pirate cables.

I also fitted a heated Oxygen sensor for better redings...i found that the single wire would cool down at idle and screw every thing up.

I still think you have some wiring issues...go over your earths on the engine and chassis and especially the one under the wiper motor.

By data logging the O2 sensor voltage via the \"tps\" input you get a very accurate reading of whats going on, the sensors \" sine wave\" reading will give a much better feel or how the car is running, if the top part of the mixture sine wave is fatter than the lower part then your too rich in closed loop.

Yes, it's the genuine cable.

Sabretooth is the man! He worked magic...

It seems everyday is a dodgy day at my place.... with sabretooth occupying one of my spare rooms, and Boags being two streets away it's great.

I really will have to get another MX5 ASAP now.
