SE RACE CAR BUILD
Hi All,
We recently listed a few bits a pieces off our SE we bought for racing.
Quite a few people emailed and asked how we go about setting up the car for racing.
Ive put together a few details and photos that partly explain what we do and also an overview of our first days of testing -

AIR TEMP INTO INTERCOOLER WAS 32 DEGREES AND OUT WAS 27 DEGREES
Does this mean the IC dropped inlet temps 5 degrees Surely the IC inlet temp would be higher than 32? If it was 32, you wouldn't need an IC
Never send a boy to do a man's work - especially if it involves stopping a fast car at the end of a long straight, repeatedly. I'd lay in some weapons grade pads if I was you ...

Thanks for your emails and messages.
EBC greens we have used for quite some time with very good results. Their cold performance is terrific – not a trait of some. For a supersprint type event I doubt you would find better. They are also suitable on a road car and are priced very competitively. They are not as aggressive on the rotor as some of the others. It’s possible to upgrade to Reds or Yellows if you feel they could be more beneficial. I also believe they give more feel with an ABS system ontrack.
Yes the cars were all fitted with the Kuhmo’s. Again a cold start scenario they would be hard to beat. Ours are a medium compound and on the SE we wore out a set in 600 km. The rear tyres suffered a little more than the fronts due to the power delivery and the outer edges on both suffered due to the roll on corners.
Wheels are the Starcorp ones. Best wheel for the $$. Very light but do bend easily (depending on what you hit!!)
Temps were all measured with Wurth digital thermometer – great investment. Intercooler temp was measured whilst car was stationary in garage – gives us a base to work with. Hard to measure it with a digital thermometer as the car goes down the main straight. Is very useful when the car is on the dyno as numerous temps can be checked and efficiency of cooling system/heat shields/intercoolers/etc can be assessed. Turbo got to 320 degrees after one Midday run!!
Hardtop is std MX5 one.

101rwkw stock @ 7 pounds and 124rwkw @ 9 pounds with cat back exhaust, Cool air induction kit and aftermarket cooler without a EBC/MBC? If so goes to show the SE turbo is strangled when it comes to breathing.
The CAI that your using looks like an interesting set up is that custom? Have you thought about changing the dump pipe?

Sounds like you are having a great time developing this project.
My question, as per usual, is: What are you guys doing roll-over protection and seats, given the 50mm rule and that you appear to be running a stock hardtop?

It's not a problem unless you are over 6ft tall and nobody checks anyhow.

The set up is very straight forward with the intercooler being a limited edition titanium edition heavy duty fully sick alloy unit (actually a $99 ebay special ) (thanks Lou for the link!!) and the pipes are the original ones cut and modified. The outlet pipe off the turbo is inverted and reduced in length to make the run to the front of the car where it joins the pipe that runs through the inner guard. At this stage the inlet is a prototype issue – made from race tape and a LJ HOOKER for sale sign (thank you Mr Hooker ). There is a pod filter in this that captures the cooler air from behind the headlight and this is also fed via a pipe that routes from the l/h spotlight hole up through the inner guard lining.
Dump pipe is on the agenda. We are trying to do it stage by stage and dyno each result to know what has the biggest return for our investment. The car is going on Monday to have the full cage fitted and the following week we start on the aftermarket ecu (adaptronic), surge tank, fuel pump. Our aim is to run it in the 1hr race at EC late next month.
Here in NSW there have been several instances of people being unable to run at supersprints due to the roll cage/ head height issue. I have not heard of anyone at a race meeting who has had a problem. Our hardtops are all bolted into place and we have had no problems and this is car number 6 with this style of setup.
