Rear Bracing

I was having a snoop around my MX5 recently and I came across this (see pics attached)

It looks like my MX5 has been a workhorse...
which is frankly... abit worrying...(imagines an MX5 towing a caravan at some stage in its life *breaks down into tears*)

Either way... its got a GOOD owner now
hehehe... *cough cough
and I was wondering if I could remove this part without compromising the rear end structure of the car? In the pictures... Those are the attachments drivers to passenger side respectively of just one long thick bar.
It isn't attached to the car anywhere else
Or would I need a new brace there?

do you have a pic of the centre?
It looks like a tow bar frame to me...
Good for mounting your bike carrier to.... :mrgreen:

There is no bracing there originally so nothing has to be done when you take it off..

I was thinking its a towing frame because it has an electrical outlet for what i assume would be the trailer lights...

Looks like the Hayman Reece towbar. It attaches using the same blind nuts as the rear tie down hooks. Rated for about 400 kg IIRC with 40kg on the nose.

sarcasm just goes over my head on these forums...

PS... it refuses to come off the car... I don't have the right tools yet (a basic socket set...) ... stupid exhaust pipe and muffler...

I don't think Canberra is significant enough to be the Nation's capital...

Definately a Hayman Reece towbar, mines been off a car for many years so nowhere near as rusty as yours!

yeah but it was only ever built for the sole purpose of being the capital, and being a "meeting place" (apparently canberra is an aboriginal word for meeting place) for the pollies. remember, it's a very young city, around 100 years old, so it's not steeped in the history of say sydney or melbourne for example.

it's not the heart and soul that our country grew from, as is often the case with capitals in europe for example. it was built to serve a function. it's just a glorified administrative centre , really. it's an interesting place to visit, for a day or 2.
