I was at Autobarn today looking for Mobil 1 and oh boi was I suprised...almost 70 buckaroo for 5L...damn!!...as this is my first only change and that the car hadn't been looked after well by the previous owner, I went with the cheaper option Mobil Syn S 10W40 at $33, rather than an full flush then Mobil 1.
Mobil Syn S was recommend for the NA on Mobil's catalogue and synthetic at that price...what the hec.

Castol Edge 5w-30 (just tried 0w-40 and it blackened really quickly - suspect just a little too light) and mazda OEM filter. Been using this combo for 6 years & 130k km, redlined daily and still uses no oil and blows no smoke. Does alright on the track also...
Cheers,

I use edge 5w-30 in my NB too but have noticed a bit of oil usage lately so have decided to change to a thicker oil.
Let me get this straight - would 0w-40 be thinner than 5w-30? because of the 0 ie. thinner at starting temp? using that logic 15w-40 oil would be thicker?

Sorry, bit innacurate there. I'm not an expert on this stuff but I do know that the further apart the two numbers are, the larger the additive package (to stabilise the oil over a wider temp range) generally needs to be. Basically the 0w40 went off (black) faster than the 5W30 - at my 5000km oil change (5w30 generally looks better coming out than did the 0w). It was also a little noisier with the lifters.

I order mine that way anyway, don't you?

I use penrite hpr10 semin synthetic. It's a 10W50, I chose that for slightly higher temps both for ambient and for when the car is pushed a little.
You will normally find the first time or couple of times you use a synthetic or semi synthetic it will blacken the oil very quickly as it will reliease the yuck the mineral oil dosn't. But after a couple of changes it will stay gold.

I was told that the oil being black wasn't a sign that it had gone off - more that it was doing it's job and holding all the rubbish in suspension.
Personally I use either Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge 5W-50. Mine is due for a change soon (8000km since last change), but the oil still looks fine. This sump full will do until I pull the engine out to sort the crankshaft out...
