whats the diff

Postby kula » Wed Nov 22, 2006 8:42 pm

ok, i need an LSD.

My engine is basically stock, but even so I find the open diff anoying.

now I have a 1.8 conversion ready to go (thanks Lou)
but I need a good center for it.

I can get a tomei 2 way at a similar price to a newish torsen center.

Understeer concerns me.
lifting off mid corner concerns me.
i dont mind noise.

what do you do?

My MX5 has a torsen and when it starts to wheelspin in 2nd gear in a straight line you can feel the torsen biasing from side to side. I have also noticed the same thing in my brothers Datsun 1600 which has a SR20det fitted.
My personal preference is a clutch pack LSD. I have owned and dríven torsens, viscous, and clutch pack lsds and for consistancy nothing compares to a good clutch pack lsd.

a kaaz 1.5 way is similarly priced to all three options too..

so they are:

OEM torsen
Kaaz 1.5way
Tomei Technical Trax 2 way

Ah ok, well I reckon that's normal. Re-shim at 25k, replace clutch plates at 50k. If you take it to Laing Diffs he'll be able to take the diff apart and re-adjust the preload back up again. It usually only works once tho before you run out of adjustment.

And yeah if I were doing it again I'd just stick with the torsen. My 2 way Mazdaspeed is a little better but the torsen never wears out.

I'd go a torsen too.

If your going to go turbo later and want a strong clutch pack lsd look at the cusco and not the kaaz.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
