Rim and tyre weight?

Postby Ralphff » Sat Oct 07, 2006 11:15 pm

I've read a lot about rim weights and lighter is better I guess? I've found a second hand set of after market wheels and can only get a total wheel and tyre weight. Is 16kg heavy for wheel and tyre on an MX5?

16kg is not too bad, but ~13-14 is better.

what size rim, what size/make tyre??

i hear tyre wieght varies a fair amount depending on construction.. semi slicks for example have really thick/stiff side walls which makes them a bit heavier??

rim and tyre weight

I run momos 15x7 which weigh 17.2 Kgs. Stick like glue (except in the wet). Every time I change from my stock 14's (11 KG's) I feel the weight difference and wonder what damage I'm doing to the suspension bushes. The ride is noticably different - far more nimble with the lightweights and more chuckable. I wouldnt like to go any heavier than mine..they tend to crash over bumps more but that could be because of sidewall height.

Slightly off topic:

Just a general question, is 5.6kg for a 15x7\" rim considered a good weight? Or is that considered heavy?

Keeping in mind that its a replica rim.

Thanks :)

My \"lightweight\" 15x6.5s are just under 5. So that is very good, especially for a replica.
I run momos 15x7 which weigh 17.2 Kgs.
The OEM 17" SE Racing Hart rims with 205/40 R888 semi slicks weighs just on 17kg per corner... :(

And the difference between these and the OEM 16" rims is VERY noticable. As Trader said, it tends to feel sluggish with the 17" but they do steer and grip better.

Using 16s for the road and 17s for the track... :)
