The usual culprit is the spark plug leads...... the mazda one are usually only good for 30,000Km. A new set for a 1.6l is around $60 from Mazda, but I would suggest getting some after market ones....

a vacuum leak could cause this...
Check to make sure the nipple cover on the back of the intake manifold is intack... and make sure there are no other leaks between the Throttle body and Air flow meter... a vacuum leak might expose itself in the form of a hissing/whistle sound.
At what rev does it become \"good\" again?
