The usual culprit is the spark plug leads...... the mazda one are usually only good for 30,000Km. A new set for a 1.6l is around $60 from Mazda, but I would suggest getting some after market ones....

change the fuel filter and give it an oil change and see how you go from there i guess. even if it doesnt fix it, its still healthy for your car. sounds like a fuel issue to me though or even spark plugs

Don't worry about oil.

Change the leads and plugs first.
If you still have the problem then start looking at fuel filter, blocked/leaking injectors, filthy throttle body maybe or even coil packs perhaps.

a vacuum leak could cause this...

Check to make sure the nipple cover on the back of the intake manifold is intack... and make sure there are no other leaks between the Throttle body and Air flow meter... a vacuum leak might expose itself in the form of a hissing/whistle sound.

At what rev does it become \"good\" again?

sounds like plug leads to me.. Mine used to do the same, then i replace the mazda leads with new leads, and plugs. It fixed my problem..

I would replace the leads, and plugs.. then see how you go..

another vote for spark plug leads. i had ther exact same problem as you, new leads cured it. i think they were about $70 from max kirwan mazda, but as some people have recommended you might wanna get some better after market leads. might be worth looking into.
