Anyone got one of these lying around?

Postby jules » Tue Nov 14, 2006 1:52 pm

I've been having issues with my A/C being \"sorta\" cold.
This compressor is pretty noisy, whirring and whining, and I think it might be the culprit.

Either that or the evaporator core. It's all cycling on and off, but is not freezing anymore, just almost cold enough.

It's a Sanden SD7H13 7317/8909 and I think it is about to die.
Apparently these are quite good units and use a lot less power than the Mazda standard compressor.
I'm just making an assumption that this is the issue due to the whole system still working, but only at about 65% cool. If anyone has another opinion, then I'm all ears.

Sorry about the large image sizes. Has anyone got one lying around or a similar unit that may suit they want to offload?

Thanks

3 weeks ago. My mates an Auto Electrician.
He told me the compressor didn't look great, but it was running a lot colder than it is now.

I'm pretty sure there is a thermostat on the heat exchanger core in the car that you can adjust that sets the temp at which the compressor kicks in and out.

Yeah, that would be the one with the knob on top? The compressor is kicking in though?

Can I just turn that up?

I'm not 100% sure about adjusting it, I haven't done it myself. I would maybe just try turning it a bit with the aircon on, and a temp probe in the core. Check your current core temp and have a play with it. Just don't freeze the whole thing up! :D

To touch the airbox is cold on the cabin side, but ambient temp in the engine side. I don't know if this means anything though :?

Hmm not sure, I think you really need a temp probe to get any meaningful data. I think my skyline measured about 7 deg at the vent with the fan on full. It could be a bit colder though, it just keeps you comfortable on a hot day.

When mine was gassed up it was reading 11 degrees at the centre vents. The top was down though. They thought the compressor might not take anymore.

It should be around 5 to 7 degrees inside the centre air vents. If you adjust the thermostat to much then the evaporator could freeze up. Which you dont really want to happen.

I've turned the thermostat all the way to full. The compressor kicks in and stays in :D :D It feels a fair bit colder now as the compressor is not switching off when the car is at standstill.

I'll get a reading if possible on Saturday to observe the temps. Hopefully I won't destroy the evaporator, but I feel it's not blisteringly cold at the moment.

I'd back it off a bit, if you freeze it up you will be in all sorts of strife. The compressor should cycle on and off. You should do the testing at around 2500 rpm too, as the compressor is working much more effectively at driving revs.

Thanks adfox. I'll back it off a bit. It was at about 6.5/7 out of 10 before I turned it up all the way.
