ummmm, thats what I was talking about in my first post. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear.

So what exactly happens in the switch to cause this? In my RX7 the switch contacts were dirty causing the prongs of the reed switch to get hot which melted the plastic on the little nobby bit that worked the switch. Is it the same deal with the MX5? I just bent the reed up a little to give it a bit more clearance at the contacts, then cleaned the contacts and never had any further problems.

thanks everyone, you have been very helpful. i have a look at cleaning it like you said, and if it doesnt work, ill buy i new one. i think the guy at the auto electricians said it would be about $300 - $400. but as long its its fixed, ill be happy with that. thanks again everyone :D

I don't know where you live, but there is a company in Marrickville, here in Sydney, called Nice Products.
They bring in stalks and ignition switches etc, and as they are the importers, I'm sure the prices would be very competitive.
If you're interested, I can drop in and ask them how much a new stalk is for your car as they are virtually next door to my office.
