Lightening a Flywheel

Hello all,

I'm looking into replacing my clutch, and I think that the 1.6 clutch and flywheel might not be able to handle everything I'm hoping to throw at them over the next year or so... So i'm going to put a 1.8L clutch and fly in.

At the moment, I am N/A with light mods so the extra weight of the 1.8 fly is a bit of a setback. I couldn't find any threads on where/how much to take off/cost to get this done, so any information and advice would be appreciated.

I have already decided to go for the 1.8 because of the extra surface area, so I am not interested in 1.6 fly options. Is there any difference between NA8 and NB flywheels?

They look top quality, but i've already got a price on clutch and flywheel with 80K on them from NA8. I will be getting it, and putting it in, but i'd like to machine it first.

The 1.8 flywheel that I have (spare) weighs right on about 9kg (most US sources state 18-19lb, which is 8.2-8.6kg...)

The NB flywheel apparently weighs a little less, and the NB8B less again... (see solomiata for exact details)

I've calculated that removing the lip from the outer edge would drop about 1kg off the mass. That's then about equal to a standard (unmodified) 1.6 flywheel...

You can check out sabretooth's website for pictures of a very lightened flywheel (lots of drilling), but I'd never do that much work on a cast flywheel. I calulated that his setup would weigh about 5.5-6kg (IIRC)... but with the holes near the centre the dangers of shattering go up significantly... Also the loss of the dowel pin holes would make balancing extremely difficult.

Buy a good aftermarket chrome-moly one. Do not stuff around with a factory flywheel unless you have it crack tested before and after. By the time you've paid for that, a 1.8 cro-mo one for around $550 will be a bargain. Just think of what happens when your flywheel destroys itself...don't expect your legs to be much good after the flywheel has cut through the tunnel. Serious things flywheels. Mania have a guy who does a very nice one BTW.
