I picked up 2 litres of Motul Gear FF-LSD Type 2 75-90w on the cheap today (unwanted drift comp prize).

Anyone used this before?

I have actually just put that into my car the other week, its very good!

I'd say on par with the Redline (when its new, not old like the last betch i put in my box) possibly a tiny bit better but thats prolly just my memory playing tricks.

One guy in the US (drifter, very good one) uses Redline Heavy shockproof in his box! Couldnt get a reason why out of him but thats what he said he used.

Put some Motul FF Comp in the Gearbox 3 months ago, certainly improved the shifting esp. 1st to 2nd.

Sweet. Only problem I have now is that I got two litres... and I think changing the gearbox oil requires a bit more than two litres.

2l is plenty, i filled my 6speed with it.

I filled it from the top (easier) and then i pulled the filler plug to see if it was full and i had some spill out.

i went through this same crap with the documentation of lightweight shockproof...
the differences in opinion, not only of mx5 drivers, but even of redline websites, forums, support were all mixed....!

so i chucked in the lighweight shockproff in my NB8B gearbox about 6 months ago and it is magical! the NB 'clunky' gearbox is no more and is on most occasions smooth as butter!

where i found it has really improved are the lightning quick shifts(race shifts i guess)....the quicker i seem to try and shift, the smother it is!

just a quick thought here:

is there any particular reason the stock recommended box oil is not being used?

HKS the oil subject brings out all sorts of preferences and debate and subjectivity. The Redline for gearboxes is said to improve gear changes. It is a high end cost oil and available at Bursons ( I am not saying it is best price though they price matched a coolant for me the other day). I think a lot of problems people have with crunchy / gnashing changes can be the result of rushing the process esp 1st to 2nd. If you are satisfied with your gear change then no need to alter oil choice- dealers etc would never use this unless you specified it. Rushed changes esp when cold can as I understand wear synchro's and best to pause slightly or feel your way from 1 to 2 rather than ram it through.

ok, so it does actually make a difference then. It's not just change for the sake of change

Yes, it makes a positive difference in the short term at least. I changed mine over last weekend, and immediately you could tell that the shifting was smoother. I'm running an IL short shifter and a knob that sits further down too, so I need more force to move the lever compared to a standard one. Having the gear shift smoother means that I don't need nearly as much effort to change gears. As mentioned, quick shifting seems to be quite smooth too, although I've only done that from 3-4 and vice versa thus far, which has always been relatively smooth.

Nope, I tried Castrol Syntrans 75W/85 Manual and had to ditch it after 3 weeks and one sprint meeting. The gearbox was tragic in the NA8 - I was missing 2 or 3 changes per lap, baulking in every gear with 3rd almost unreachable. Went back to Redline - all fixed.
