That's the precise reason the "informed ones" reckoned it wasn't good for running in - it was too good.

Whether they're uniformed or not has little to do with it Garry  . I put the quotation marks around the words informed ones to emphasize they were the ones I was referring to initially.....but they were just people from the oil business, engineers and and mechanical trade.

 I also found the \"non synthetic\" comment rather hard to believe, and yes, it was certainly talking about running in the turbo, not a turbo engine... Now i have to find the bloody thing!

I was just adding what I had read, it is not gospel by any stretch...

Oh, and the fuel bit was obviously and error. You need to pump oil in... Which makes sense, i wouldn't want ANY bearing turning AT ALL without oil in it, however short the duration.

If it's ball bearing it would be fine. Bush bearings... well I dunno about oil but I certainly don't run oil onto the bush bearings at work though they are all greased and some equipment is not done that often :? and they seem to survive alright since they are low load (bearing only there to stop the shaft falling on the ground... much like a turbocharger really). A tiny amount of time without oil when they are cold would be alright... not so much when it gets hot though I certainly wouldn't recommend running without oil but I would bother with complicated start up procedures.

Ohh and I would half agree with the HSV bloke (even though he's no more than a marketting pleb and wouldn't really know I'd imagine) in that that it wouldn't matter. From what I know 9 times out of 10 you run mineral oil because it's cheap...and you intend on binning the run in oil within 500km's anyway so no point spending big on long life synthetic oils. Run In oil is usually the cheapest nasty thin oil you can get I would reckon since it has to get in between the fresh bearing so they don't run without oil and also is being binned soon enough.

Bush bearing require no Oiling. This is because the Material used
( Phosphoresce Bronze ) is Porous and is self lubricating .
Also the Turbine shaft doesn’t leap into action on startup. Rather, it reaches rotational
Speed at Idle similar to that of your ceiling fan

From the Garrett website

How should I break in a turbo?
A properly assembled and balanced turbo requires no specific break-in procedure. However, for new installations a close inspection is recommended to insure proper installation and function. Common problems are generally associated with leaks (oil, water, inlet or exhaust).
