1.8 BP Turbo help...

Postby green_comet » Tue Oct 10, 2006 5:34 pm

Hey everyone,

Well after much thinking/day dreaming, i think it has come time for me to start getting some parts together, for a future turbo upgrade.

first on the list is a turbo manifold...not having much experience in turbo parts, i have no idea what would be a good turbo manifold to suit my BP 1.8?? I know that AVO sell a manifold, but im just wondering if anyone could recommend something. Would it be better for me to get one custom made?

Im just looking for some info and opinions at the moment, any help is very appreciated.

cheers :D

The AVO Manifold Is the same as the SP one and is the one I have on my car . I think that AVO charge $750 for a manifold which is not bad
for what you get. They can take a S*#t load of heat and not crack

i think the main thing to remember is that you need to make sure your manifold is compatible wiith whatever turbo you decide on. it seems that most manifolds for the mx5 are desgined for t25 / t28 flange style turbos.
i settled on a turbo from a nissan rb20, which uses a t3 flange. therefore ruling out most of the aftermarket manifolds. altho you can get adaptor plates made up apparently.
anyway, just thought i'd mention this as it is an important part of the decision. good luck with it.

Thanks for the info...

Do you know what type of turbo is suited to the AVO manifold? I need to sit and have a good read up.

cheers

any turbo with a T2\"x\" Flange from the T2 family will fit an avo manifold without modifcation.

So example

T2 from nissan pulsar ET (tiny turbo bush bearing)
T25 from CA18 Silvia (still tiny bush bearing)
T25G from SR20 Silvia/180 (bit bigger again bush bearing)
T28 from SR20 s14 and s15 aus 200sx (bigger than t25, still bush bearing)
T28 from sr20 GTiR pulsar (biggest of the factory T28 turbos bush bearing)

GT28-R (ball bearing turbo same size as s14/s15 jap spec ballbearing turbo i belive)

GT28-RS Ball bearing bigger again, known as disco poteto

Gt2871 -ball bearing again. biggest of the T2 flange.

AVO sell there kits with the GT28R (gt2560r) think its rated at about 320HP turbo.

garrett turbo websites use slightly diffrent names like GT2560r for better definition of there turbos as many have diffrent wheel trims and exhaust housings.

Hope some of that helps...

Excellent.. looks like I have all the info i need for manifolds.. :D

Now its the question of a computer to run the setup. Im looking at using a 5th injector, like the stage 1 avo kits.

Can anyone recommend different piggyback computer's to run the 5th injector, and retard the timing when its on boost??

I have been looking at the TurboLink Controler.

TurboLink
Turbo System Control. Use either the factory or after-market solenoid and schedule your own boost map, with taper if required (sixteen zones). Either 2 or 3 port solenoids suitable, (3 preferable).

Auxiliary Fuel Control.
Add up to six extra injectors for fully mapped (96 zone) auxiliary fuel from full vacuum to high boost right across the RPM range (3D).
RPM Switching
User configurable drive. Use for your shift light or VTEC control or inlet runner control or something else.
Ignition Retard
Reprogramme the ignition advance curve.
Factory ignition timing on distributor based systems can be modified in order to control the detonation (knock). The TurboLink applies a precision mapped (96) zone) programmable delay on the signal between the factory ECU and the factory igniter.

What do u think about running something like that? Will it be able to control the timing, and extra injector? or will it have problems, because mx5's use coil packs, and not a distributor?

Sorry im a noob at all this.. its all jibberish i tell ya.. :?

5th injector can work (cheap and cheerfull method) but it's not what I'd be doing personally as it's a bit hit and miss. Spend the $$$ and get a full computer and upgraded better injectors if required.

I wanted to use the piggyback management, as i would like it to be legal here in vic.

Erk, don't do a 5th injector setup. They're uh, average at best. I'd get some proper fuelling control if I were you.

The Stage 1 AVO kit is legal (It was only for the 1.6's when I checked years ago so not sure about the newer 1.8's etc...best ask!) and fully approved, but only when bought and fitted by themselves or another approved service agent. Perhaps do that, get your police/epa paperwork and then go for a decent setup.

Then Nothing.

Actually the TSI piggyback isn't too much of a bad thing. If you must have a piggyback. Nizpro in Melbourne might still be able to supply, fit and tune them. Dunno if they can be used on a MX-5 but it's probably one of the better solutions short of just getting a full aftermarket and hiding it in the car.

Emanage can run extra injectors, two of them actually - but not sure if they are alternating or simultaneous??

if it was altering then i would think you could run each signal to two injectors each (simiar to what the stock ECU does i think??) and have a full set of extra injectors next to or underneath the stock ones and run massive boost/power!!! hehehehe
