SR20 is your best bet if you are chasing those kind of figures...availability of parts and all fairly cheap. Never seen an SR20 conversion done though...don't know how much custom work would be needed, but keep us updated whatever your choice is

Why 240rwkw? Why not just aim for around 200+ and see where that gets you. 240rwkw is roughly equivalent (power-to-weight) to an R33 with 350 rwkw or a HSV with over 500rwkw. So pretty powerful then.

Like everyone else has said the SR20det is the way to go (IMO). You could even do your target power on stock internals. An SR20det with ecu, intercooler, exhaust, and at least a T28 size turbo (you might have to go GT30 - go to www.nissansilvia.com for ideas) will give you fairly good power, and be the easiest for the power range you are looking for.

But be aware, if you do it yourself it will be a lot of money (probably around $10000 once you factor in all the bits) and a LOT of work. And if you pay someone to do it add $3-4000 on to that...

Would love to see it done though! :D

240kw is easy for both 13B and SR20

id like to see an SE engine pushed, 200rwkw is at the level you want...
easy converison too.

SR20DET - It's a Nissan 4 cyl turbo, as used on 200sx (just incase you didn't already know).

But I agree with others, it's not that difficult or expensive to build a reliable B6 or BP turbo MX5 with around 200rwkw.

Again as others have said 200rwkw is massive in an mx5.

whats wrong with boosting the standard mx5 engine? For the money spent on converting to an SR20 engine, just rebuild the mx5 engine. Heck thats the path im goin :P

If you’re chasing horse power perhaps the MX-5 isn’t the right car for you.

The MX-5 is all about balance you want your power to be linear and predictable.

A 180kw MX-5 could easily be “quicker” than a 240kw because it’s easier to use the power and it should make more power lower down, unless all you care about is drag racing?

Personally i’d leave the big horse power figures for the show ponies who like to stroke their massive turbos and build a turbo setup for drivability.

Speedworks sell a great SR20DET kit, but you might find building up a 2lt BP engine is just as cheap and easier to register and insure.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I thought it made 237? Either way, If you plan an making MORE than him(which you need to if you want 240), prepare for a expensive build up...

Have a chat to steve next time you see him at a show, he's one of the friendliest blokes in the MX5 community and will defiately help you out with advice including what has and hasn't worked for him 8)

Nahh you can make that sorta power cheapish, you just need to expect the engine to blow up on a dyno sooner rather than later

I love your enthusiasm Ben. The first step in any project is talking about it and gaining as much info as you can. Second step is to rob a bank or similar to fund it ! .......Hang on, make the second step your first step  all kidding aside, you will need about 15k to get all day, everyday 240kw.There is no way around this cost unfortunately. A $300 Ebay turbo aint gonna happen. 150kw can be done well with a stock engine for half that cost and is a great platform to build from. I'm sure you already know this by now though. An S15 Silvia is worth considering for power versus cost but yeah, they don't excite me. The MX5 drivetrain can be fragile above 200kw as other people have mentioned. All said and done I hope you give it a go and can't wait to see the results.
