Has anyone done or know of a mod for the NC console to get rid of the useless drink holders and simply have a storage space?

Ah welcome to the Japanese trying to appease the US market but failing there and worldwide.
I’ve been meaning to do this mod for the last 9 months but haven’t had the time. I had been hoping that the aftermarket suppliers would have come out with a fix by now but no luck.
There are a few on Miata net that are worth reading about. I think the best and the easiest I’ve seen is where the curve ends are retained and just the intruding centre moulding is cut away and replaced by straight sides. Then you cut down the lock to give added clearance.

The 2 on the console are the cup holders. The ones on the doors are water (or soft drink) bottle holders in Australia. They're bigger in diameter.
But in some countries, where smoking is still acceptable, they're ashtrays

hmm, cut off the little tab, line it with some cloth and you have a great coin holder for the tolls
