Should my car be blowing black smoke?

Thanks Steve. Guage is working fine. Bonus with the ECU sensor being at the front and easier to access, provided that's the problem.....

NA6's have Three Sensor two in the back off the head One for gauge and one for ECU And then one on the Thermastat housing for the fan
NA8 had Two both in the back of the Head and none in the thermastat housing

They have two at the back! :shock:

I've been trying to work out why my coolant temp gauge hasn't worked since I changed the engine - all is finally revealed!! (Obviously I should have been looking at the wiring diagram a little closer.) Only problem is I only have one at the back now, I'll just have to wire it into the ecu temp sensor I guess...

Dont wire it to the ECU sensor :shock:

The ECU will get incorrect reading
I have a pic some where of the two sensors will get them up later

Thanks for the pics JBT. So the one I'm missing is the lower rh one on the 1.6. My engine looks like the lower photo, so I'll have to work out where to put a temp sensor - shouldn't be too hard. Thanks for your help folks!

AFAIK, the temperature gauge sender is the thing just below the heater hose clamp on the 1800 engine photo. The other (large) plug on the water outlet housing is for the ECU connection.
