LP Gas on an mx5?

anyone bothered looking into this, or anyone done it?

i remember reading about the \"gasresearch\" system a few years ago, looked 'em up on the net and sure enought they're still around. altho the website is pretty devoid of much useful info and they're not answering their phones today :roll:

anyway, basically they use a specially made carby that supposedley gives much better performane than a dual fuel set up, even better than a standard petrol set up.

the other thing that seemed interesting recently was the system on \"the new inventors\"... again, they are on the net but the system is still in development and isn't for sale yet.

i guess the main issue would be finding a gas tank small enough to fit in place of the standard mx5 tank, coz i sure as hell ain't giving up anymore boot space :lol:

I guess you could always have the tank fitted to a small trailer and tow it behind the car!

What they should be doing is a conversion to run on pure methanol, then we can advance our timing and up the boost even more.

Nah Benny, they will come up with a tank that is shaped like an airfoil which you mount on a luggage rack on the boot :lol:

bad bad bad .....less weight + high octane fuel = more speed

gas is only good for BBQ's

I've heard of this being done on some performance cars. Apparently it is much simpler than a petrol system and can give more power, as well as being cheaper to run obviously. Although you have the installation costs to begin with. Don't know too much about it myself but I seem to remember seeing it on some Nissan RB25det's and older RB30det's.

yeah the idea was to do this as part of a turbo install. anyway the tank thing is making it look like a no go. the only thing that looks like it MIGHT work is this apa g84 thing, you can check out the dimensions on this pdf

idea was to rip out the standard tank and replace with this, but i doubt it's gonna fit. it could go under the boot or something i guess but it's not looking promising :frown:

I had a look at some of those tanks, the smallest one was 310mm diameter, 660mm length. Surely that would fit?!

Do you know the intake/fuel supply mods required for the engine? Must be pretty extensive...

i have heard a turbo + gas is not a bad idea but i think these cars are just too small, you would imagine some head work done. cost of putting it on would probably take years to payback.

Little Johnnie Howard must have been reading this post because he is going to help us out with a $1,000 grant towards the conversion cost and if the Nats get their way we will have the option of running on pure ethanol as well :shock:

I'd prob still prefer it to replace the fuel tank though, All that wasted space!

yeah i might hang back on this for a while and wait and see what happens with this rebate thing.

i had seen those spare tyre tanks on the apa site. and the small one that moggy mentioned.. still i reckon you can only fit a very small tank in either spot which would mean filling up every 2nd or 3rd day... major pain in the ass. i think glenn is right, our cars are just too small to do it properly and make it worthwhile, BUT maybe you can fit 2 tanks? one in the spare tyre spot and one in place of the petrol tank .... hmm ?

Spare wheels are on the way out anyway. The next generation NC will probably come with run flat tyres or the kwik fix spray can leaving plenty of room for the U-beaut gas tank insert.

And where will it get us in the end? Remember the time when diesel was cheaper than petrol? The Feds are now going to apply excise to LPG and taxes only go up so it may not be be too long before it is the same price as petrol :roll:
