Clutch shudder AND weird rattling noise from gearbox

Postby maxwolfie » Fri Aug 04, 2006 1:13 am

OK, not only do I have the usual clutch shudder, recently there has been a loose rattling noise as well right as you engage the clutch (not a metallic vibration, its like something is actually completly loose and banging arouind in the gearbox somewhere.......... What could it be? I suppose this is pretty serious and I should take it to someone that knows what they are doing??

My guess is the throwout bearing...

Sounds like a good time to drop the box and do the clutch whilst your down there!!!

If it is the throwout bearing then it isnt terribly serious, just noisy. But my bet is that the clutch shudder has caused the throwout to die and hence it is prudent to do the whole lot, pressure plate, clutch plate and throwout bearing.

Likely to be the throwout or spigot bearing. Either way the box has to come out and both can be easily done at the same time. I replaced my spigot bearing just recently. No special tools are required for this as it fits into the flywheel not the end of the crank so its easy to get out when you take the flywheel off.

Cool, so one of two cheapo things to replace, just not to cheapo to GET to in the first place... how hard is it to drop the boxes in the NA6's? My last mechanic told me I have to drop the sub frame too ($$$$$$)

How much should I be looking at for both of these to be replaced and laobur (estimated of course)

Get a new mechanic. You can do it at home with basic hand tools. But it's not very pleasant.

Don't worry about it. It's not serious. I had that same rattle from the throwout in my last car (NB8A) for a good 10,000km. Just let it go until you need to replace the clutch and then do it all at once. 8)

PS. I never actually ended up fixing it either.

Just thanks your lucky stars its not a front wheel drive...

I did the clutch on my old celica... Ended up removing 3 of 4 engine mounts and dropping the whole engine 2 inches to clear the wheel arch so i could remove the box...

2 weeks of late night swearing and frustration...

But so worth it for the pure satisifaction of doing something yourself...

Man you kill me... :D
The clutch shudder is probably due to the throwout bearing being cactus.
Haven't you fixed that yet?
That was like, last year when i told you about it!!!

I guess you just have to decide if it's that bad that you have to fix it. Of course, you don't HAVE to fix it till the clutch stops working...

If you do fix it, get new throw-out and spigot bearings, and a new clutch disc and plate (should be able to get a decent heavy duty one for $3-400 new) and rip out the gearbox! Only problem is, it's an awkward job, dirty, and not overly fun... If you can get access to a hoist it makes it easier.
