Busted Gearbox

Postby Sheck » Sun Jul 23, 2006 1:19 pm

Hey guys, i've killed my gearbox by clutch kicking while drifting so i was wondering if anyone has tried straight cut gears before or if you know how much stronger they are and how much they'd cost? Or what brand is a good one to try.
I've got a spare box that i'll be installing this arvo so i figured i'd rebuild the busted one stronger as I'm not really keen on replacing the boxes every year or so.

The gears arent completely stuffed as i've been driving on it for a week or so now but the first 3 gears whine like reverse. I think it may be an input shaft cause i was mainly kickin it in third with the occasional one in second and never in first (i always gave it an easy take off).

Any input would be appriciated, cheers.

Hi Sheck,
I was speaking with Ian at Hi Octane Racing about the SE drift car. I believe that even with OS GIKEN 1st to 3rd gear sets, they still broke them. After going thru 2 boxes they finally took a series 2 (I think) RX7 box and custom made a bellhousing to fit.

Another of my mates that has close to 200rwkw and does autokhana recently broke his NA6 5 speed box as well. He has just decided to swap to another cheapie 5 speed box. This would be the cheapest option.

Lastly, Mania have a 6speed box in their green NB turbo race car and its still holding up. In fact, I'd like to know if anyone here has heard of a 6spd box breaking coz the story is that they are much stronger. Simone swears that they are the best.

I have my own gearbox problems as well :) so this thread could be very informative

I saw one recently. :( I don't think it's that common though (and it certainly wasn't on a standard car).

The SE one is supposed to be stronger still - it may be an option if you're looking at a simple solution. No idea how it would stand up to drifting punishment though.

there are a few guys in the states that install the full rx-7 (not sure what series) driveline. It does require a motor gearbox adaptor but the show you in detail how to fabricate it.

They say its the ultimate unbreakable driveline, shame i cant remember the site... i saw it a while ago.

maybe something here might help

Thanks guys, yea i think i've got that site from the US it'd be a really good convervsion (series 4/5 rx7 box) but i'm not keen on all the custom work ie belhousing or adaptor plate and the ppf mounting points.

Is the OS ginken set straight cut or something else? Gotta be pretty worried about it if ppl are still breaking straight cut gears!!
Six speed would be nice but then i'd have the change the diff ratio right? stock is like 3.7??? and i've got 4.3 guess its not too much of a differance could help with racing and drifting haveing the different gearing...

PS the rx7 box conversion sitee is here: http://www.geocities.com/crash41301/

PPG dogbox.

Brian busted the 6sp in his race car yesterday, Nicks car (the green mania MX5 SP replica) has also done a 6 sp box. Thoughts are at the moment that the standard boxes can't cope, the SE boxes might be better but we are yet to find out.

just emailed PPG for some prices on a set of straight cut gears, we'll see how bad the damage to the hip pocket is..

if anyone knows of ppl in brissy that produce gear sets then let us know and i'll shoot them off some emails or ring them.

Cheers

I asked PPG if they can make up some straight cut gears for me (caus their website claims they are the best can make anything and also they make their own tools to make these other parts) and i got a reply of something like: \"we used to make a dog box and it was 6k but lack of interest made us discontinue it\"

Not very helpful, oh well.

The new box i put in is a little noisy too so i'll have to do the rebuild soon. Where can i get gears? i am stumped as to where to look.
I'll email guru tomorow

I have a brand new PPG dog gear set for the 5sp box available for $6500. If you are interested. It would need a donor box and be installed Alternatively you can have a built gearbox for $7,000.

The dog gear set was acquired for a Improved Production race car but never installed.

The box is located on the North Coast of NSW about 2 hours from Bris.

PM me if interested.

Cheers

Thanks Brian, pm'ed you
I'm just after some straight cut gears, dog gears will be too much hassle for daily driving.
Besides i'm a poor student i cant afford to blow 6-7k on a gearbox alone!!

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!!!!!!

Hahahah ok second gearbox that is about to grenade at any moment and thats only after one event!!!! plus i had redline shockproof in both boxes damn.
This one sounds worse than the first with 1st,2nd,3rd sounding pretty bad under accel and decell 4th sounds bad under decel but fine under accel and 5th you can just hear a whine under accel.

Oh well i'll be calling around for a replacement box today, and then i'll be looking into my options for a stronger box. Anyone in brissy have a spare box laying around?

dude, maybe you should look at your changing your driving style before your next gear box
the first thing you want to slip is the clutch. this should be the weakest link in your drive-train.
sounds like your going to be chasing your tail for awhile.

hahaha this is drift guys!!!!! you dont want the clutch to slip!!! besides my old one did slip and it was worse for drifting. As for driving style, I'm always changing the things i do and try to take different lines etc but its drift, sometimes you just gotta pop the clutch a couple of times to kill the understeer (and the gearbox  ).

Basically i'll be doing a few more things to the car to try and get rid of the understeer, new bushes, new alignment settings, and fixing that damn handbrake (new cables and some \"drift\" pads for the rear) but for now i got the gearbox at the mechanics to see whats happening (pretty sure the gears are just too weak to handle abuse and power) and to get a quote.

I've contacted the HIOctane guys and they said the gears are just physically too small to handle power and drift abuse.
I've also posted on the US roadsterdrift site and alot of guys there are breaking boxes a couple of the regular drifters are up to their 4th box!!

Another major thing (after the suspension, bushes etc) is that i need more power! This will stop me from poping the clutch which should make the box last longer.
Oh yea and i never dropped the clutch off the mark and most changes were pretty slow due to waiting for the gears to select. The engine is just rocking way too much inbetween changes - i'll be getting a engine torque damper to help that.

I'd go a to a TII gearbox. A mate of mine ran a very low 10 second pass (9.99 :D) in a S3 RX7 with a 13bT with this gearbox before it broke so it should be strong enough. A bit of a hassle but it'a synchroed and helical cut and has all the factory goodness but should handle the abuse/power.

Ohh and stop clutch popping, just scando flick it into corners.
