When you recheck it check it with and without the terminals bridged. The timing should change if it doesnt it means you are putting it in the wrong terminals or you are not getting a good connection.
What kind of paper clip are you using? is it one of those paint coated ones as that wont be able to transfer the current.I find it best to use a split pin that u can bend to the correct shape.
If your engine is running that much timing you may not hear it ping without the use of a Stethescope??? those things doctors listen to you heart with. But your combustion will be very very hot and not only may your pistons be pitted your ringlands could be severly opend up/cracked, and your head could be damaged also. I think you may have the wrong mark or incorrect terminals. If you really want to check your mark you will have to line up your cam markings and see if the mark is on TDC. Hope you get it sorted.
