turbo clutch problems and adjustment

Postby 4sfed5 » Sat Jul 08, 2006 9:26 am

Ive got a 1800 flywheel and an \"xtreme\" 700kg clutch and full face disc in my 1600 turbo and its started slipping, if i re bleed and adjust its ok for a few days then it slips again. ive got a NEW slave in it and the master is only a year old. it is driving me nuts.
has anyone had similar clutch slipping problems? its almost like the pressure in the line builds up not allowing the clutch to be released somehow...im wondering if the near new master has gone bad???
it used to engage low to the floor and now its high after only about 2000k's on the new clutch and several adjustments.

ANY IDEAS??? (how much for a sprung 6 puck disc??)

I don't have the answer  but I have a similar extreme clutch and can confirm it is living up to my spastic monkey driving style...

I'd pull the master and have a look at the piston and the seals. It sounds a little like air is getting in?

check that no oil is leaking onto the clutch also - althought the problem shouldn't go away when adjusting the clutch settings if this were the case

well i just pulled the master cylinder and its stuffed.....great, less than a year old and its leaking fluid out the piston seal and has rusted the circlip,(and probably the inside of my firewall too) damn. ive got a replacement so will put it in and readjust and bleed again.Im getting very very good at this now!!!!! :( this cars clutch hydraulics are a joke, had nothing but problems with this car.

the only thing that i can think of that would eat seals and your car is brake fluid. one time when my fluid was low in my troopy i used brake fluid to get me home which was fine as i flushed it out the next day. if i hadnt it would eat up all the important bits over time.

Glen..not sure what you mean there....the clutch system uses brake fluid.
basically what happened was that the piston seal on the master cly failed and rusted the end of the cylinder at the circlip end.(pedal end)..... problem is that the piston should return hard up against the circlip when in normal driving operation. with the rusty clylinder end and circlip, the piston would not return all the way causing the clutch to slip.

How can this be ????
If your slave (or MC) is stuffed doesn't your clutch just NOT disengage?

If your clutch is slipping then the MC cylinder is not your problem.

Two things will cause a clutch to slip
1) Lack of friction surface
2) Incorrect free play (on the pedal or thrust bearing)

I'd be looking at the later

btw, I hadn't realised that Sean was so cute hehehe, great pic

Woo.
it was the master cylinder leaking fluid very very very slowly causing the circlip to rust. this meant that when you take your foot off the clutch it wouldnt return to the freeplay position and kept pressure in the clutch line like you still had your foot on the clutch. it stopped about 3-4mm short of the circlip and this translates to a HUGE amount of travel at the pedal.

how do you attatch photos to posts??Ill take a pic to show what i mean.
