Some advise please for a MX5 newb (immobiliser)

Aftermarket I'd say. My NB8B has the factory alarm and it uses the factory remote. Welcome to the addiction!

From my experience with these, the NB8A has a factory immobiliser built into the actual key! To cut new keys, you need to purchase direct from a Mazda Dealer (about $25 per key), get the key cut by a locksmith, then take it back to Mazda to get coded to the car.

Now, because you dont have previous documentation, the Mazda dealer will have to request (from Japan) the code for your car. When you go in initially to get the key, they will need to do this as it takes a few days (there may be a charge?).

It is little bit of messing around but its not that bad.

The Alarm pad will have three blue buttons if it is factory, and will say Mazda on it. If it doesnt.....cant help you, if it does....a Mazda Dealer will help you with quesries no worries!!!

I believe all NB8As came with a factory immobiliser that doesn't need a remote, it's built into the key.

Do you have a key with a fat rubbery plastic top? If so, you've got a factory immobiliser which is built into the lock and key. The car can't be started without one of the original keys (or one programmed in by a dealer). You shouldn't need an immobilizer unless someone steals your keys (in which case, they'll likely have the immobilizer fob anyway.

Ive got a shark alarm and that seems to work fine

Ive also heard good things about the range from JB-Hifi, Warlock I believe.

The immobaliser is in the key, the 2nd \"alarm\" might be for central locking and to set of a siren if the doors are opened.

Does the remote look like this?

Definitely aftermarket ALARM then, but immobiliser will be factory (as stated earlier, built into the key). Dont waste time and money worrying about another immobiliser, just get the alarm going/replaced!
