Tein SS question regarding upper mounts

Hey guys

Just a quick question i'm hoping you can help me with. I'm looking to purchase a set of Tein super street coilovers for my NA. I have noticed that there are two kinds; those that come with tein upper mounts, and those that dont.

Price difference is around $300 between the two.. what exactly is the difference? Will using the standard upper mounts be noticibly different to using the set that tein supply with one of their kits?

I noticed that only the ones with the Tein upper mounts are compatible with the EDFC.. That is not of concern to me, so am i better off going with the cheaper kit?

Upper mounts, you must be referring to pillowball mounts? Pillow balls are needed if you want to adjust camber on strut type suspension, like Macpherson strut where there are not camber adjustments at the control arm. The MX5 doesn't need these as you can adjust the camber from the bushes on the lower control arm.

If however you want to run major camber then you should get pillow balls as they allow the shock to swing more to the outside of the car. You also need to have offset bushes installed to get that camber in the first place.

I'd say you don't need them. BTW the EDFC is compatible with the standard tops of the SS.

Just for anyone interested, i have managed to find a supplier that can get the Tein SS coilovers with pillowball mounts for ~$1650 delivered! Pretty happy about that price.

Cheapest i can find the Tein SS's without the pillow mounts was for ~$960 brand new before shipping\\taxes from Japan, so i'd say around $1400 delivered! I am awaiting on an exact price from Greenline which i should get tomorrow, so i'll update this post then.

Perfect Run (http://www.perfectrun.com.au) have the Pillowball mount model cheaper than greenline do; 97,700 Yen which is about $1,150 AU before delivery.

Assuming they're like the HA pillowballs (they're not identical but fairly close), you'll net a fraction more bump travel (maybe 5-10mm), and theoretically better damper control by virtue of removal of the rubber bits...

I have just paid for a set, $1435 without the mounts through Greenline. Can't wait to get them.

The japanese optional upper mount for SS isn't pillowball, but is a "reinforced rubber uppper mount". Basically it's an alloy plate with a stock-type rubber bushing in the middle. Based on Justinfox's experience, it does seem to allow the car to sit lower, like Matty says.

I'm not sure if the EDFC can only work with the Tein upper mounts or not, but the stock mounts have a "sunken" middle section which might not provide enough room for the EDFC motor thingies, but I'm not sure.
