Don't forget the timing belt

And as far as Ebay goes. For something you only change every 100,000kms and is a bitch to get at, I'd suggest getting the bestest you can get, not the cheapest.

You may wish to replace all 3 oil seals. 2x cam and 1x crankshaft. I would.

Seesimilar post on 100000km service in this thread.

I didn't do the cam seals, but did do front engine seal. VERY easy but careful job.

Don't buy parts from EBAY - I got all my parts etc from Repco - for piece of mind in case something fails or doesn't fit it is worth it. Not like you can walk into EBAY with the wrong fanbelt and exchange it..... e.g. the timing belt I bought has afull replacement warranty, including the stuffthat goeswrong if it breaks. Try getti g that from EBAY, and at $180, it's piece of mind at not toomuch cost.

And I HIGHLY recommend getting the MX5/Miata Performance Projects Book by Keith Tanner. It is a fabulous howto manual for just about everything you could EVER want to fix on these cars. It tells you what you need, what order to pull it apart in, and more important, how it goesback together.

Budget about $400 for all the parts, and then factor in tools, and food for the service crew. It took me two weekends, but only one day in each, and I made an event of it. I also had to do the waterpump. You could easily complete the full timing belt/drive belt change project in a weekend, in time for the drive in with the lady on Sunday nite.

It's very doable in a day with time to spare.

I think you're a little too addicted to eBay, ABS. :)

You don't necessarily need the cam belt tensioner, idler pulley and spring - I'd only replace them if there's a problem (wear, noise, damage, etc) or if the spring is out of spec.

I reckon if you are doing the job yourself(not paying for labour) just change the belt...thermostat is easy because you have to pull that top hose off anyway.

Like Sabre said,Most of the other stuff like the water pump, idlers, seals, best to check and only change if worn or leaking, lot of this stuff is best left alone.

If you have to change something down the track then it's just a couple of hours of your own time..

I know you like playing with your car Astro.

thanks guys...

im with you Lou and Sab.

thnk i'll just change what I need and have good look at everything else as a check and change them if i need to.

I do know that I need to change some of the other belts because they are starting to get squeaky and im sure that when i pull them off they'll be cracking.

and yeh.. im addicted to eBay.

I'm trying to remember how easy the tensioner and idler are to replace later on if they seize or anything?

You can get to them without taking off the pump or belts can't you?

I had a chat one day to Paderaig from Eurocars. He owned the turbo Mariner Blue and is/was the Service Manager at the dealership. He is IMHO a pretty trustworthy source.

He recommended through experience that the Mazda Genuine water pump was better than the aftermarket ones. This was due to him installing an aftermarket one to his car and finding the casting was different and not as strong on design. He also mentioned that the impellor blades were smaller on the aftermarket unit. He took it off and went genuine.

Just food for thought. FRom memory the genuine item is more expensive.

Mazda pump #MZ-B6BF-15-010F $141.76 (no gaskets)

With club discount from Grand Prix $127.28 (no gaskets) 8)

I forgot to compare the original and REPCO on the dodgy day we just had, would have been a good opptortunity.

Yeah, the belt can stay on the car. It might be a bit of a push to get the idler in but that's about it. For what it's worth, my car's done 118,000KM and I'm using the tensioner + idler + spring from my other engine. I'm also using the water pump from when I did my water pump change at around 67k (and put it on the Familia engine when I did the engine swap). I'm not adverse to doing work on my car so if the water pump fails it's only a little bit of labour to replace.
