Painting the instrument cluster dome thingy hahaha

Postby initial_mx5 » Wed Jun 28, 2006 11:35 am

I was wondering, would it be possible to paint it? Or i should be more specific, what paint should i use and what adverse affects should i expect?
Basically so it looks something like this:

I painted my meter cover recently, just gave it a light sand with some really fine wet rub and then used a metallic automotive touch up spray can from sprints , like $12, powerplus i think was the brand?? and then sprayed with clear coat of the same brand. vwallah!

Guys, the above pic was taken from the body kit thread....

The interior belongs to a Miata in the US, tuned by a garage over there with lots of mazdaspeed parts.

Refer to this linky

http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=mazdaSpeedTuningPersonal&sectionParameter=tunerProfile27&bhcp=1#modsummary

It doesnt mention where that gauge cluster actually comes from... I think it may be a custom job :(

Nah... im pretty sure its not too custom, ive seen the exact same one on turbo jap import car over here in adelaide.

so being an import it was in u may be find one in a japanese online store of something, either that or they both had the idea to custom make the same thing... which is also possible.

in the big forum, it says that those gauge clusters were made a while back..there out of production now. Made by some performance joint in japan.

Try doing a search on the miata.net forum, i just did a quick one. :D

Or you could always go one of these..

Nice work comet!
Pretty good find!

They both look pretty good... but for my little \"under the radar\" car probably a little to LAM (look at me, look at me!)...

That one there looks pretty well made and would be a pretty awesome addition for a show car !! hmmm... 8) showcar...

doh.. the little voice says \"dont do it... dont spend anymore! no to show!!\"

to do it properly, lightly sand it, spray it with plastic adhesion primer, spray it with paint primer, spray it with paint, spray it with clear coat. it will need some light sanding between all these coats. all up cost will be less than $40 & it will look good.

Just be aware that you might experience some glare from a glossy paint job. My mx-5 import from Japan had the cover painted and when its sunny I experienced some really annoying glare that gets reflected from the windscreen.

A pair of polarised sunglasses will fix that problem 8)
