Brake Pads ?

Hi guys,
need new brake pads for my 1993 1.6

Im after something streetable that I can depend on when I go for a spirited drive in the twisties, and also last a few laps on the track. I dont plan to go on track all that often, maybe once or twice a year, so the vast majority of driving is done on the street/twisties.

I think i need something along the lines of these

high performance
can stop well cold or hot
doesnt not chew up the rotors
reasonable pad wear
not too much dust
not too much noise
not too much $$

I've read the many threads here and on the old forums and I think I've narrowed it down to either the Hawk HPS or Bendix Advance (the advances seem to be the cheaper option at a little under $120 for all 4 corners). Which one would be more suitable to my needs?

Sounds like you'd be best sticking to stock. I'd hate to be cleaning any more dust off your wheels.

What's the latest pal? Still keen for a photoshoot? I am.

I have put these on the Front along with new rotors and I dont think there is any more dust than previously. I havent put them under real pressure yet and they work well.

That would be for each end not corner :lol:

With pads you pretty much get what you pay for and having said that, the stock pads are pretty good and won't fade on the track.

Hey, I'm still up for a photoshoot after I finish my exams next thursday. Maybe organise a little cruise too...

well, from discpads they are $60 for the front, $40 for the rear and another $15 for shipping. So do you think that the advances would be ok at the track then?

I wasn't happy with the Advance.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

but they're not a bad pad are they? would they be ok for what I'm after? or would u reccomend the ultimates as a better alternative?

Ultimates leave a lot of dust, thats why I tried the Advance.

There has to be better than both these pads.

That said i'm not too happy with my brakes at the moment, probably need new rotors and a good fluid flash. :?

Learn to love the dust.

Then get some Cobalt GT-Sports.

EBC redstuff and they seem great. Track they didnt fade at all and they only dust up after a couple months of driving (on the track they dusted up after the day of racing). But they were 240ish for the front alone...

When you pay $60 for a set of pads, you can't expect they are decent for anything but driving to the shops - sometimes not even that. Good pads cost good money - as with everything. Hawk HPS is the first step to better pads, then if you want a more dual purpose track/road pad, check out Hawk HP Plus. They have also introduced a ceramic which my tech contact at Hawk reckons is a good thing with excellent cold performance so is well suited for MX5s.

There's my sponsors plug done. I really like Ferodo DS2500s for dual purpose and Matty likes the Cobalts - these are all very good pads. Once you have experienced a decent pad, you will not go back to cheap crap.

Unfortunately no-one sells them here.

My vote is with Matty, the Cobalt GTs are a fantastic brake pad.

One word of advice though. Which ever brake pad you end up getting, you need to bed in the pads properly. Too many people just have them fitted and never bed them in, and then they wonder why their brakes are crap......
