Terratrip probes

For those running rally computers for classic rallies, what kind of probe are you running?
I'm thinking the generic gearbox probe would be easiest but perhaps the wheel \"bolt\" probe on the front wheel might be more accurate when one spins one's wheels....

Thoughts?

It should be able to be run from the back of the electronic speedo, both ours and Abyss' does

And mine.

Its wired directly to the loom. Just dont use the "other" orange wire like Abyss did. (ducks for cover)

You will need the proper probe wire, see GP Cars for it.

I am not mentioning where the wire is and I did forget about the probe :oops:

although for the price I shouldn't have.

Fra,

I am using a 3 wire probe as the others have said which wires directly into the loom.

They are about $50 just for some pieces of wire from GP Cars! (everywhere as the same price)

Don't connect it to the wire GP Cars tell you to, I'll have a look and let you know which is the correct one.

I'd always recommend using the proximity switch type probes, counting off a non-driven wheel for any Terratrip. For AWD rally setups always off the front wheels works ok. They're pretty easy to mount inside a hub.

For insurance I'd set up a probe on either side as the switches do have a life and they do sh*t themselves right when you least want them to. When one goes, merely hit the switch and start counting off the other side.

The speedo drive isn't my favoured setup as it is prone to the wheelspin factor, which in reality is pretty marginal anyway. With experience you'll find that you make allowances for wheelspin in wet or slippery conditions.

Of course, back in the 'good ol' days', we'd be switching the Haldas on-off-on in wet crappy conditions, then the cable drive would break, or the gears would jam, but they're a whole bunch of other stories...

DAJ - gone are the days when maps were older than the Haldas.

BTW if any of you want me to pick anything up from Demon Tweeks, just ask. Not saying I will do it though, the 2 belts, 3 Terratrips, 2 seats, 5 OZ wheel, Elise etc may just attract some attention at customs

Well, I've got the binnacle apart and the back of the guage cluster sure it purty :roll:

The only \"orange\" wire I can find is in the one black connector (closest to the driver's door and it's more of a tan colour. Is this the one I should be connecting to the end of my 3 wire probe?

Thanks Dave but not to worry. I got it sorted late last night.
Found a PDF of the guage cluster on the net and it was in fact the one I mentioned in my last post. Only down side is that it doesn't seem to register anything unless you're going faster that walking speed (usually not a problem :mrgreen:

).

Just need to reinforce the mount now and I'm set...
