MX5 Motorsport

Postby sirbob » Wed Jun 07, 2006 8:57 pm

Hey all

I am looking at getting a little more involved in some form of motorsport in the MX5 an was wondering what are the options...

Currently i am liking the idea of either buying a used race prepped car or modding my current NB to make it raceworthy.

However, there is one major hurdle in this plan, that being that i have no idea where i could use said racecar in QLD!

What events are the for the 5? Is there a class specific series or does it fit into the general <2L classes?

Has anyone had any experiance in running an MX5 in the local rally/track scene?

I have seen a lot of info about MX5's being a 2F class racecar... What is this class?

There are a few events on over the next couple of months. Full blown race car not required:

Track Day at Morgan Park Warwick - 10 Jun
QLD MX-5 Club Mt Cotton LVMA (with WRX Club) - 24 Jun
Non-Club (quite a few MX-5s) Track day at QLD Raceway - 4 Jul
QLD MX-5 Club Track 1/2 day at QLD Raceway - 10 Aug

In terms of track work, there are several optios.

Monthly Sprints at QR - $75 for about 15 laps
Monthly Topgear series - $110-odd for 5x5 laps races
Private trackdays at QR, Morgan Park (Warwick), and Carnell (Stanthorpe), and the rumour mill has it Lakeside will be opening back up to club motorsport.

Thanks for that... The track days for QLD raceway are on weekdays, which is not an easy option for a working class man, however, the Saturday Sprints @ Willowbank look to be a viable option.

Lou is spot on the money with the 2f scene in QLD.

The next Topgear race is on the 2nd July at QR where the MX5 are the only class to have our own race. We should have around 15-20 that weekend so come out and have a look and chat to the guys.

Its free to get in and all the QLD MX5 guys are keen to talk and get more people out on the track.

Added to that are the tarmac rallies such as:

Motorshow Rally (Feb/March usually)
Coastal Challenge (16/17 June)
Qld Challenge
Kilcoy Rally (30 September)
MG Iron Man Weekend (Sept)
MG Hill Climbs
Monthly Marque night runs (3rd Friday of every month)

All of the rallies require a road registered car and are navigation as well as some special tests. Most of the above form part of the MX-5 Challenge that is run every year.

There is a lot out there if you are keen and can afford it!

Is one of these also called the Indy Challenge? If not there's another. $900 I believe for 4 days of motorsport, including accomodation.

No, these are the \"low cost\" ones, as an example Coastal Challenge is $200 this year for a 2 day event, no acommodation.

If you are really keen there are events like Targa, Duttons, Grand Prix Rally and the Indy one you mentioned. Ithink there is an Adelaide one as well, the list is probably endless.

Needless to say, there is ALOT of motorsport going on up here. Well worth getting into it. Neil's just finished building his racecar and Cal's just started his. I'm sure they'd be willing to give advice if you choose to build one yourself. If I has the funds and a place to do it that's how I'd get going, that way you know how it's been put together.

the 2B and 2F rules take up 12 pages of the CAMS manual so to spell them out would be a big undertaking:

Simplified definitions:

2B - Highly modified sportscars on slick tyres

2F - very restricted modifications on treaded tyres.

Net difference abot 6-9 secs a lap at Eastern Creek

Cheers
