Leather restorer / cleaner

Postby Steve Tinker » Thu Jun 01, 2006 10:53 am

All you guys with the posh leather seats - what brand of restorer / cleaner can you recommend using. My wifes Volvo leather seat inserts need a bit of protection from the Qld sun - whats the go ??

I've been using Zorbel, obtainable from shoe repair places, and I've also been trying to soften with a quality penetrating leather dressing from a saddler . . . makes sense to this country boy . . . . . . seems to be working well too.

leather restorer/cleaner

Postby trader » Thu Jun 01, 2006 6:49 pm

Whatever you use keep away from leather cleaners/restorers used for dressing leather saddles etc unless you have a '38 chev.. I have just spent a grand having the seats refurbished in my Eunos 500 by Uticolour. I have had the car for six years and every month fed the leather with the stuff. I was pretty dissapointed in how the leather deteriorated. Uticolor explained how the leather is sealed unlike saddles -makes sense. They market a leather dressing for sealed leather and I'm now using it on the Mx5 as well.. time will tell how true it is. Cleaning is done with Lux and warm water (not overwet). Incidently, Pete at Uticolor colour in Canberra did a fantastic job and also fixed a hole in the softop.

Meguiars Leather Foam works best for me. Spray some foam into your palm and work well into leather, especially the stiching.

Cheers :D

Just had my Howe leather seats cleaned and resealed by Doyles. Boy did it drink up the conditioner and I have use Meguairs Leather protectant 3 times in 8 months.

Make sure you work the conditioner into the tops of the seats around the head rests. This is the area that cops the most abuse from the sun.

A big tip from Doyles is NEVER use a cloth to apply the conditioner/cleaner to the leather. It is too abrasive and will remove the finish from the surface.
Use a large pore sponge, similar to that use to wash dishes.
