Last tech night for the NSW club was with Toyo and they talked about interlocking tyres also.

I think the “old” Precedas are great. As can be seen in my track times below. The NC was the fastest car on road tyres around Queensland Raceway at Natmeet. Quicker than a lot of turbo and supercharges MX5s running semi-racing rubber. Not bad for first time at the circuit.

It has to be kept in mind though that they are not a race tyre but a high performance tyre and therefore suffer from block squirm and overheating when put on the track. On the road I don’t think you would get to overheat the tyre.

nah, they don't overheat on the road at all...........just get up to a nice operating temp when spanked thru the twisties :mrgreen:

Garry, I get all my road rubber from Wheels. They always give me the best prices on rubber and the service is great. They once did a swap of some yokohama tyres fro free when the first set were crap.

I always do a couple of check prices and they are always competitive.

Yeah Brian. I've had great service from them. One of the few companies that actually call you back when they say they will.

I still haven't managed to go for a decent drive on the new tyres but so far they pretty much feel the same as the old ones except a bit quieter.

How long did they take before the initial slipperyness wore off?

I've only done abour 40's k's on my new Revspecs but haven't pushed them yet, going to let them scrub in a bit before I start giving them a hiding.

Much smoother and quieter than the old Toyos though.

That latest wheels mag has a review on all the latest performance tyres.

Dunlop SP Sport - 97.1 out of 100
Goodyear REVSPEC RS-02 - 96.9
Maxxis MA-71 - 96.3
Pirelli P Zero Nero - 96.3
Michelin Precedas - 95.8

And the rest are pretty ordinary from here down.

After a trip around the city they seemed OK. So maybe 40-50kms.

I dont put much faith in magazine tyre tests unless they are testing the tyres on my particular car. I've found that what works great on one car doesn't necesarily work on something else and vica versa.

Exactly my thoughts too. The other thing you have to worry about is if the results are at all paid for.

A mate has these tyres on his MX5 and I was blown away by them, so thats what I based my judgement on.

I finally had a chance to have a bit of a go on my new tyres today. If you liked Preceda1's then you'll love Preceda2. They seem to have even more grip in the dry (who needs a torsen when you have grippy tyres?) with a quieter and smoother ride. Steering feel seems about the same as the old tyres. So more of the same except better if that makes sense.

Still waiting for some decent rain to check out Michelin's wet weather claims. If the wet weather performance is more consistant than the old model I'll be very impressed. That was the old model's weakest link in my opinion.

We have finally had a bit of rain in Sydney and the new tyres are much much better in the rain than the previous ones. So good that they remind me a bit of the rain master P6000's I had on my NA. In the wet it'll still spin the back wheels if you push to hard but corner grip is much improved. They are the best wet weather tyres I've had on the SP easily navigating my test roundabout like it was dry. :mrgreen:

Just bringing this thread back to life since I've been talking to a Michelin dealer (Tyre Plus Brookvale) about the Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2s ($190 a corner)

Any comments on these tyres? Garry seemed to be happy with them ...

Yeap, 2/3 worn out and still happy with them. :mrgreen:

There's probably stickier tyres around, and longer wearing tyres, and quieter tyres, and comfier tyres, and cheaper tyres, but as an overall package they are pretty good.

I am at the point of frustration over the tyre dealers that I might just slap bicycle wheels on the MX5 for fun, laughter, peace and joy.
Whenever I called up another tyre dealer, they'll rubbish my previous choices and claim theirs to be the best ...

"Nankang is the best bang for your buck ... I've been in the biz for 25 years" ... "Hankooks are great! Look up their European website, I've been in the biz for 30 years" ... "You want Continentals ... they are German and OE on luxury cars! I've been in the biz for 35 years!" ... "Michelins are the biggest tyremaker in terms of choices! Precedas are better than Toyo T1Rs!"

You, Andre from MX5Mania and a few of our forumites seemed to be the sane ones to date in terms of proper recommendation of tyres

If I called up the dealers in order from the best to Nankang or Wanli or some weird third world country brand last, I am sure the last dealer will say that it superseeded the likes of Toyos, Michelins or Bridgestones

What has a grown man got to do to get some good HONEST advice these days?

Tyre advice is really hard. Everyone has slightly different preferences when it comes to tyres so finding something that suits you can be pretty hard using someone elses advice.

I wouldn't listen to hard to a retailer though. They will quite often push the brand that they get the best deal from or the stock they need to get rid of. Most will have very little experience with MX5's as well. So something that works great on a Camry may not suit an MX5 very well.
