Isn't the SP heavier at the front because of the bigger turbo?

I'm not sure about the SP but it probably is because the whole 22kg or whatever extra it weighs is pretty much all located at the front. The SE will have some of it's extra weight negated by the torsen diff at the rear However the NA is the most front heavy of all the proper production MX5's because of the pop up light hardware.

With every new model Mazda says that the new car now has a 50/50 weight distrubution. Maybe they have the same problem reading weight scales as they do with dyno charts. It's either 50/50 or it's not I would have thought.

Jules,

...now why the hell would anyone want to fit a LSD to a SP?

As an MX-5 owner i'm sure you can appreciate that power isn't everything.

A lot of different elements go into making the complete package.

It’s interesting to see how people weigh up the differences between the two cars and decide which package they prefer.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

THE REAL BORIS wrote:It was an unbiased question; I thought it was 108rwkw SE to 120 rwkw SP.
Mazda seemed to have underated the SE by only claiming 121 flywheel kw & the SP seems to have lost heaps in the transmission if we are to believe 157 flywheel kw.
The Mazdaspeed dyno figures agree with the SE figures i.e. 178 flywheel and 145 rwhp (108rwkw).

At the risk of being accused of SE bashing yet again, those SE dyno figures have always been questionable. Why? Well they always seem to be quoted from a non-dyno dynamics or a hub dyno. The in-gear figure would also probably be biased towards the SE on a direct comparo due to its lower final drive making the SE ATW figure seem higher compared to the SP gear for gear - hopefully someone can set me straight.

The SP figure seems about right - around 30% seems to be widely accepted as normal driveline loss (the SP was rumoured to actually be a bit fitter then Mazda's insurance friendly 150kW) and my own SP recorded a figure in that range when on two different dyno dynamic dynos (136kW ATW after some ChipTorque finessing).

Anyway, there are lies, damn lies and dyno figures.

I guess the real test is in the standing start times. Using reputable magazine figures (two up, half a tank of juice I guess), the times are:

SP - 0-100km/h 6.46s 0-400m 14.74s
SE - 0-100km/h 7.39s 0-400m 15.33s

I seem to remember in the S2000/200SX/SP comparo though the SP was closer to a flat 14s 0-400m???

you will always get a slight varience between cars of the same model. even on the same day. If you get 5kw ATW variation between stock NA6A's you'd have to expect the same or more for cars twice thier KW.
maybe your motor was buitl on a Mon.
