Well you need to look back a bit Casey - prior to around 1970 virtually every race car had leather seats, and on a practical level leather is a lot more fire resistant than almost all car seat coverings other than nomex and wool, so it really is a good choice for racing even now. Doesn't need to to slippery either - suede looks good and grips well....

I guess I'm looking forwards, not back. The performance version of the M3, the M3 CSL ditches the cooking version's leather seats for Alcantara, as does the top-line no compromise Ferraris etc. I couldn't pick a modern racing category where leather seats are used. However leather would be great for those brown undies moments

I think the problem for me and a lot of others is not the width but the thickness of the back. It seems a lot thicker than the MX5s which means I can't get far enough back from the wheel & pedals.
