Squeel on takeoff - clutch bearing?

Postby Insurgence » Sat Apr 29, 2006 2:51 am

Hi,

I get a squeel if i take of at a reasonable speed off the line (ie launching in first gear).
it's only when the clutch is 1/2 engaged, and doesnt occur if i take off really slowly or when the clutch if fully out/in.

i had a search on the archives and sounds like the clutch bearing.

any get something similar? also what about $$ to fix?

IMHO it's more likely to be the spigot bush - where the gearbox input shaft engages into the fly wheel. The bush should be replaced when the clutch is replaced.

if it is the spigot bearing/bush (is it a bearing or a bush on the mx-5's?)

it should be under $10...

labour is where it gets expensive if you don't have the know how yourself...

just get both and borrow a knowledgeable friend and make an afternoon of it... no point doing just the spigot and then having the thrust race start making noise a month later :D

Mine does this too. I plan on changing whatever is needed when if have to do the clutch. What are the parts to replace if the clutch is out?

Clutch (duh)
Spigot bearing
Throwout bearing
Anything else?

definately machine the flywheel -- no clutch warranty without it (and if you've been thinking of installing a light-weight flywheel, this would be the time!)

I don't think I'd go substantially lighter, perhaps a little while it's getting machined.

Mine just started to squeal this morning as well. :(

Group buy on spigot bearings then. :)

Almost 5 months on my car is still squeeling away (helps me practice not riding the clutch)

Dealer seems to think it's the thrust bearing on the transmission, and if that were the case it is ok until it gets really really loud.

has anyone fixed their squeeling with success?

Bearing traders do them for $6 - bought one last week.

If you intend on changing flywheels, make sure you have brand new from mazda flywheel bolts - never use old flywheel bolts. Use loctite on the clutch ones as well. Plus, use the correct high temp grease on the throw out and pilot bearings as well as the fork pivot, contact point and the input shaft. 8)

Bolt stretch. Flywheel bolts are very fine threaded bolts which are done up to from memory somewhere around 100nm of torque. This stretches the bolts. Once stretched, the strength factor is much reduced. New ones even come with the factory loctite material on them. For about ~$40 maybe, you'd have all new bolts.
