Mania's race car (the green NB8A...actually I think Nick owns it) is running a big turbo on an SVT engine and using the computer from SP Motorsports. Might be worth a call?

EDIT: Doesn't MX5_Driftfury also do Motec and looms that work for the SVT...pretty sure he does.

Nicks car runs a standard SP turbo and turbo manifold - as does Brians SP replica. Both currently run variable cam timing as per the SP. It's the rules in 2B and prod sports. I may also upgrade my SE to SP turbo and manifold - which is allowed under the rules.

I may also upgrade my SE to SP turbo and manifold - which is allowed under the rules.
It's not really an SE then is it, especially if you ditch the stock suspension and wheels and get something more race inspired. The only SE bits left are the body kit, gearbox and diff

Ah yeah, forgot about the compression and forged bits, well spotted.
Not sure where all the extra bracing is though. The only extra bit I know of is the silver heat shield thingo under the clutch

In fact if he changes the turbo to an SP he would also need to remove the SE bodykit as the rules don't allow bodykits and the SP didn't have one.
The same goes for the extra chassis bracing!!!

Bodykit = extra weight anyway! And that would be different to an SP replica how??? It will be a race car afterall so this is quite a fruitless debate - but an amusing one. Let's not start the which is a better race car debate - so far, neither of them have proven anything. Who wins though is purely a battle of the wallets - nothing else.

What parts are forged in the SE's motor over the 'regular' BP? Anyone have a source?

None that I know of (a bit like the "extra bracing" and "bigger brakes" urban myths I suspect). The SE does have one-way valves galore on all it's 'vacuum' lines and it has a dinky little catch can tucked under the drivers side of the engine bay brace. One of the catch can lines cleverly runs through this bar

. So there are differances between the two cars aside from the enormous gulf in capability

I find this topic interesting and the views of my fellow MX-5 enthusiasts worth the read (even if we agree to disagree). No one is holding a gun to the head of anyone not interested in reading on

Which begs the question - wouldn't it have been cheaper to build up a SP replica like Brian and Pilsner from a wreck/cheap import NB8B rather then build an SP replica from a SE?

I'm with Casey on this one - this is a great way to expose some of the myths that seem to grow around every 'performance special' that car makers release. I recall reading with great interest the various interpretations of the SP's development (is there anyone you know who wasn't in some way involved in the Mazda Motorsport operation

).
So now I have heard for the first time that SE's have forged internals and extra chassis bracing - is this a new myth, or does someone have details of what and where these special parts are? I would never attack any other five as being 'less' a car than mine - there are some NA 1.6s out there that left me for dead at Wakefield!! I am truly interested to know what others think, and what points of difference the various models have. Who knows, one day I might want to buy an SE, or an NA - the more factual information exists in these forums the better IMHO.
