Lower ball joint

Postby mr_rotary » Wed Apr 12, 2006 12:57 am

I have tried to source an aftermarket lower ball joint to suit a 1990 NA and have had no luck so far.

Is there an aftermarket ball joint or only a factory part available?

Anyone have a contact for an affordable priced ball joint?

I had a contact that is the wholesaler to Repco. I did purchase a pair only to find they where totally the wrong part. Part supplied had a flat piece off the ball joint with 2 holes inline (no thread) and no thread on the joint itself. I advised them this was the incorrect part and that was the only part that the manual showed! The part was a "Powermax" brand.

I had thought about going into a store myself to check.

What was the brand of your ball joint and the part number (brand's part number) :?:

Here is what is should look like:

Went into Repco to see if they had any lower ball joints to which they did have in stock and at a usual higher WA price of $45ea

Once again, these where exactly the same as the ones I previously purchased and looked nothing like what was fitted to the car!

Guess I'll try the Mazda dealer :(

If you're a member of the MX-5 Club of WA you get 15% off parts and service at Mazda Dealers Statewide. :D
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

mr_rotary, your spot on about the ball joints being different.

I pickup mine from my mates workshop which were ordered through Repco and came in a Repco box yesterday all ready to be fitted today but to my dismay there totally different to the one you pictured and the ones on my car :( Guess Repco screwed up there somewhere)

Kind of glad their incorrect as their quality leaves a lot to be desired, so looks like i'll be getting genuine ones too @ $85/ side (ouch)

Phew, I am glad I am not the only one then who encountered this problem - started to get a little frustrated. I have now been to a couple of places and they all seem to pull out the 'incorrect part'. This includes Powermax Brand and the Repco Brand. I have no idea where these brands pulled that part from as it looks totally different to the ball joint pictured above installed in the MX-5.

Guess that only leaves buying a genuine Mazda part.
