Best thing about the SP is that it looks like any other MX-5! :)

It's an arguement/debate as pointless as a 1.6 vs 1.8 or red vs blue debate.
It ultimately comes down to personal preference.

If I bought a turbo MX5, it would be purely for the horsepower gain. I'll let you then guess which car I would buy.

Now, if we go back a year or so and I wanted a new MX-5 then the decision between an NB8B normally aspirated and an SE would be a \"no brainer\".

People just buy them for different reasons.

Now, back to that Crystal Blue Metallic SP. Has anyone found it yet?
I've already had THE talk to the wife about the red SP for sale in SA.

Poll Added.

We all know they are both great cars, each with some unique features.

Perhaps the poll with stop any bickering and see where the weight of opinion within this forum stands.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I know nothing about SE/SP's, but I suppose if you have the cash, you could get the SE and just slap a bigger turbo on (not that easy obviously but you get the point)

or get an SP and slap some shocks and an LSD in. Might be easier/cheaper.

It's not actually huge. It is in fact perfectly sized for its application (unlike the SE's). Boost comes on strong at 2500rpm and it makes boost all the way to redline!! On my dyno charts the boost rises sharply to its max, and then stays there until the rev limiter. Quite a remarkable acheivement. In my discussions with Lachlan prior to and after the release of the SP it is obvious that a lot of thought went into the choice of turbo and matching the impeller and exhaust wheels.

Well, the std NB8B MX5 gearbox is also used in the S15 200SX/Silvia and the Lexus IS series which comes with a stonking 4cyl turbo engine in Japan (this is what Neil Bates drives in the Targa Tasmania - not an Australian delivered Lexus at all 8). So I would say this is no more a marketing exercise then the "blueprinting" of the 10AE engine. Not needed at the SEs power levels one would suspect 8).

Boyracer wrote:Boost actually comes in at about 2500rpm.

The SP is already well on its way down the road by now while the SE is just waking up.

Boyracer wrote:SE is the whole package,SP is a drag car(if you fit the LSD)

Lou - this is just silly. So you are saying a std MX5 is only a very slow drag car that can't go around a corner? Come on

Not true... The IS200 has a Beams 3SGE 2.0L non Turbo, our IS200 has a 1G motor (like the 20 year old Soarers).

This is still just a case of my dick is bigger than yours... and completely pointless.

Have you looked under Neil Bate's bonnet then? Never wondered why his "IS200" punches so far above its weight?

The car I was talking about was the Altezza T280. Basically the Celica GT4 engine IIRC. Of course "comes with a stonking 4cyl turbo engine in Japan " was the wrong turn of phrase. This car has been superceeded and the T280 version was a limited run.

Lots of SP's and a very limited number of SE's come in black. There's 2 white SP's but I think you'd have no hope of getting their owners to part with them. No white SE's for any price.

They were released in Australia 2005 after all the faithfull MX-5 fans who had wanted black had already bought some other color SE.

I'm not sure how they got here but there are a few metallic black 2005's with the updated wheels getting around. They'd be hard to find because they didn't bring many in.

In Japan the SE is called Roadster Turbo...I have seen a photo of a white one...must have been a JDM only...there is a Orange version available in USA.
