Would they be a waste for primarily road use on a basically stock Clubman?
Eg - even stock 14 inch rims...

Would ya get more than 10,000k's out of a set?

IMHO I doubt you'd get the benefit of their additional grip as they won't get enough heat to really stick. That's why the RT615's are such a great compromise.

The Toyo's aren't like the Dunlop D-01's etc, they are seriously grippy even when stone cold. I remember going to do a U-Turn and gave it a hefty dose of right foot and it just took off with no wheel spin.

Mmm, ok. But you still will not see 10,000kms in them will you? I guess if money is no object and they are good in the wet, then they would be good for road use.

Not sure on life. My set of RA-1's did over 10 + outings at Wakefield and I drove down on them too (around 400k round trip not including racing) and they are quite knackered now. 10K might be feasable but it'd be a fun 10K! 8)

If you are looking for long life and quiet running then type R rubber is not the choice.
The down side is low wear rate and more noise.
The up side is grip, and serious amounts of it -------- SERIOUS :D

I am really suprised with the low noise levels from the R888's on the road, but then again they are very new and who knows what will happen when the tread depth gets down. It was the same with the RA1's till they got down, then the noise came in, not as bad as the DJ01's but certainly not quite.

The RA1's are seriously grippy in the wet, did sub 1.17 at Wakefield with them on in the wet as a guide.

Not sure about the lap times I was doing at the South Circuit on the weekend, giving a few HSV's a full lap start and hauling them in in 4 laps, I think we were moving. Just to make sure ordered a lap timer from Mania today, that way I will know. With R888's.

Personally, for road use, if you don't mind low wear rates the RA1's are seriously sensational, no warm up, just grip. If you have ever been into bikes, you will know what grip costs. And the benefit is that they are a more conventional tread pattern, so not easily recognised as a typr R tyre.

Snoopy took the 5 out yesterday, it still had the R888's on, came back with a real smile on her face, \"I want that car on Friday, just the way it is\" she is going to Gosford and has plans for a highway run on the way home.

Put wear rates to the back of your mind, worry about it later.

Do it, your 5 will love you for IT.

Down side is the size selection with RA1's, R888's have a better choice.

I was at Gordon Levens on Saturday, and they were not keen to sell R spec tyres for road cars as they don't have a true load/ speed rating (e.g. they will say 87, not 87W). It didn't really matter to me, however it may pay to check first - as it would be a great way to have an insurance claim hassle... :(

Interesting comment.

The RA1's from what I see don't have a rating, the R888's do.

Good question for the Tech night.

I can't compare with other \"sticky\" rubber because I've only had street tyres before, but I've just put 888s on my otherwise standard SP, and

* they make a lot of noise
* they stick like sh!t to a wool blanket, hot or cold, wet or dry
* they dont look like they will last anywhere near 10,000 km on the road
* they took 2 secs of my times on the QR Clubman and National circuits
* the Henri van Rodent race guys kindly put the pyrometer over the tyres after a hot session. I seriously need camber! - the outside is doing all the work
* they need to be about 25.5psi cold to give 29.5 hot, and give even temp across the tyre
* even as bog standard as the car is, I posted best time of any road registered car on both tracks except for *one* hot lap by Verne johnson on each. That's a hot car/driver combo!

888s and SPs rule :)
