Ultralight Rims

Postby adamjp » Sat Mar 25, 2006 7:16 pm

OK.

Does anyone know of an importer for SSR Competition rims?

I ask because I am in the market for a new set of 16s and these seem to be the lightest available - anywhere. :D

http://www.tirerack.com/servlet/CallJsp?target=wheelSearchCloseUp&wheelIndex=47&sizeIndex=2&showRear=no&setIndex=9&filterSize=16&filterFinish=&filterSpecial=Pricing

Shipped from the US - $2500. :(

But at 11lbs (5kgs) for 16inch  , that is REAL good.
The stock NA6 rims weight 5.8kgs.

Link doesn't work :(

I'd settle for a set of 15x7 SSR Comps, but I wonder about availability. I recall something a while back from Brian Goodwin's site to the effect SSR had stopped production, but since I am not buying at that price its academic.

These are the rims on my car - AU Racing 122's in 16x7\"- and they are significantly lighter than the OEM 16's (had one in each hand and the differnce was large! I'm guessing around 4.9-5kg). Good news is the price - Around $520 a set from Direct Wheels at Blacktown. They also have a 5 spoke design similar to Lenso/Starcorp but I think it is only in 17/18\" sizes. They are imported by the BSA wheel mob, so might be some info on their site. Mania had some last time I was there in a cool copper/gold finish, so they can get em in for you too.

I believe the ssr's are being made again.

I picked up a second hand set in a 15x6.5 last year. Nice rims, definitely light enough. It is hard to see the actual colour if you don't have direct sunlight, they are actually painted a gold colour, it looks good if you ignore the ordinary paint on the rest of my car.

The Starcorps only weigh 5kg for their 16X7's and are cheap, cheap cheap.
I can also vouch for thier strength too.

Whilst I have not personally held any Starcorp wheel, let alone put one on some scales, the Tempe Tyres website does make special mention of the weight of the Starcorp in 16x7.

Specifically they make the point that it is approximately 6kgs per rim.

http://www.tempetyres.com.au/products_closeup.asp?part=&part_no=155

Of course their price is very good, I just prefer a 6 spoke design over the 5.

The SSR website can be found at http://www.rd-tanabe.com/ssr/

I fitted 16x7 starcorp rims to my uncles Astina, and they felt alot heavier than 5kg, mind you they had tyres on them.... i think 5kg is the weight of the 15\"..

MX5 Mania states:

15 x 6.5 Weight >5kg
16 x 7.0 Weight >6kg
17 x 7.0 Weight >7kg

My uncle is around wednesday night, so ill take a rim off and put it on the electronic scales... :)

I've got the starcorp 15x6.5s and I did weigh them when I got them. They ended up at about 5.1kg a piece so about 6kg for the 16s would seem about right. FYI, with 205/50/15 ES100s on them they weigh about 14kg (measured last week).

Adam,
I too am looking for another set of lightweight 15x6.5s for some track rubber and I'd like to go under 5kg per rim if possible. If you find something good, I'd be happy to participate in a little collective bargaining...
Cheers,
T

That would be AUD.

US$340 / wheel.
US$400 postage.

US$1760 is around $2500 OZ.
