DO NOT polish chrome plated plastic!!!!!!!
Just wash it with water and detergent, but do not polish it otherwise the chrome and nickel plating will easily rub off.

Plating chrome onto plastic is quite different to plating metals.

I'll go even further than Benny. Do not polish anything "chrome" on an MX5 with Autosol. I learn't an expensive lesson when I first got my car. Regular car wax is about as aggressive as you want to go on everything except maybe the exhaust tip.

You can use Autosol on chrome but you should only use it to remove rust on metal plated chrome. Chromed plastic isnt really chrome so should need polishing. Just use a chrome cleaner (most car car cleaning companies make them)

The Autosol is great on the stainless sill protectors, but that's all

I wouldn't even use it there. It made my NB ones go dull.

some comapnies in the US offer a vacuum metallising service for auto parts, anyone know if this service is available here? I'm thinking that in most cases it would be cheaper to replace the part rather than pay postage both ways, and the 'rechroming' of the plastic part.

That's how you plate onto plastic.
There is someone in Sydney who also does it, but their prices are off the planet.
I wanted to get a 4 small pieces plated, and they wanted something like $30 per piece to do it!

I had the rear roll bar covers of my NC done here in Sydney I think the Co. was called Metal Finishes P/L at Punchbowl for $60. Took about a week as my job wasn't big enough to warrant a run by themselves.
I thought about having some other pieces done at the same time but the car being only a couple of days old at the time, I wasn't up to pulling it apart that early on.
