New Rotors / Backing Plates / Question

Postby MVZOOM » Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:26 pm

Replaced the rotors on Monday night - yes, very easy job, although I think I put them on the wrong way for the slots  - even after CT advised me to check. I'll pull them off on the weekend, dress the calipers properly and turn them around.

I treated the new rotors pretty gently for maybe 20 k's, then did a few big stops. They were smoking hard after 6 or so aggressive slow downs - maybe I overdid it a bit..?

DIdn't replace the pads (although I have a new set in the garage) as they were 50% worn. I noticed when I pulled them off that the backing plates weren't fitted - the caliper piston is pressing straight into the back of the pad.

Is this a big issue? I assume the backing plate helps spread the load a little? Where can I get new plates from?

Mike,

Don't worry about the backing plates, I think they're there more for noise than anything else. I wouldn't bother trying to fit them.

as for the rotors I was always under the impression of taking it easy for a while before putting serious heat into them, they're somewhat different to bedding in pads.

I also remember on wrx's we used to put the rotors on the wrong way as track testing showed it actually made an improvement. Can't recall whether DBA then changed the recommended direction for them.

the smoke maybe storage oil burning of the disks. some times metal products are given a fine coating of oil to protect them from rust and such while in storage. when they heat up this could burn that off.

my DBA's had right and left writen on the boxes. when looking at the disk installed the main slots angle backwards. hold your index finger up in front of your face and then angle the tip of your finger back.... that direction :D
