TEIN SS vs PSS9s

Guy and Girls

I was wondering whats the better of the two TEIN SS or PSS9s, Ive heard good and bad things on the PSS9s especieally the part which is good with the PSS9s being able to be rebuilt and which bothers me, that they cause the back end to be tail happy and a larger front rollbar will help.

Only heard a few things / read mainly about the teins , has anyone tried both in similiar or the same type of 5.e.g. NB8B

Tein offers different specs of coilovers for our car

Such as Flex, RA, Super Street, NA and HA...... (still waiting for Tein to release super racing and super drift coilovers for mx5 :( )

Other coilover options are HKS Hipermax and cusco Zero, Zero2 and comp S

If you have a bit more cash go for Ohlins :D

well i only had experience with Tein and Bilstein

Tein on my echo with was great: damper and height adj

And Bilstein on my vitara

both were great and also can be rebuilt

I'm happy with my Tein Flex, no issues yet.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

SS Fitted!!

Rightio then, I have now fitted the SS to the NB8B to replace the kings/stocky shock combo that has served us well for the past 4 years. What a world of difference! WOW :shock:

I have been running Tein Flex on the race car for 3 seasons now and have been very happy with their quality - no doubts they are a good product and I think very well valved as opposed to some other shocks. So my decision to put the SS on the NB wasn't as risky as it might have been otherwise. Good product etc etc. (Tein, where's my sponsorship!)

How to they ride? Keep in mind my wife drives this car every day and it was quite crashy over Sydneys moon crater like roads. I noticed instantly how much better the car absorbed bumps. No crashiness at all. I ran the shocks at 1/2 stiffness front and rear and it felt very good, quite comfy and no pitching. The front end was well supported under hard braking which I think is a good indication of controlled valving. When you push the car into an apex it sits very well and is firm, but not so stiff that it's unsettled by bumps which is excellent. The front to rear bias seemed quite good at road speeds too which again is important for the NB8B which can be a little rear biased. (This car also runs whiteline bars front and rear(soft).

Verdict: First hour or so in the car for me and they are definitely miles about the previous setup. They are firm, but not teeth jarring. they are also well damped and I I think, an excellent choice for upgrading. Now that we can get Teins serviced by Fulcrum they are a good choice too. I rate them very well. :D

I havent run the Tein's... but your more than welcome to take my 5 for a run and see what you think..

then you need to take CT's for a spin and compare :)

End of the day, comes down to the valving rates matching the spring rates. Never dríven on a PSS9-kit shod MX5 so its no real comparison, but both Tein and PSS9 seem to be well made, Tein provided things like the C-spanners and damping adjuster as part of the standard kit (not that you really need the adjuster). For the price, Tein SS is hard to beat. Was just about to stick a set of PSS9s into a S2000, but after trying the Teins on MX5 and Integra TypeR, I think Tein Flex is going in.

Std Tein SS setup for the MX5 is an extremely sorted street package. Will swap my revalved and short body Bilstein with Eibachs in an instant.
