Garry's post is the first I've heard of with regards to a 'metal thing'. My headunit screws to the cage and that stops the headunit from moving around.

Those part number I have listed on my site should still be valid. The prices might have increased a little - just give your local Mazda dealers a call - they tend to vary in price a bit. Mania isn't necessarily cheaper.

Thanks, Sabre, yeah the fascia was $55, and the pocket was $8, 'special' Mazda price :)

Also, metal cage not required, pocked clips to the fascia, not the cage.

Cheers,
Dino.

I had the factory single din headunit in my '96 NA and my pocket clipped into the metal bracket thingo. The bracket thing also gave something for the headunit to rest on, otherwise it would fall down.

Maybe aftermarket stuff is different.

Hi peoples, I am not an MX5 owner, but my wife is, she has a 1989 white MX5 (will post pics soon) that we have just spent lots of money on at Dicks MX5 factory here in melbourne (he did a fantastic job).

The trouble starts with my ambition to upgrade her sound system.

I put in a $1000 head unit, but as I found out, the centre console is not DIN width. So the fascia for the new head unit sits out, and protrudes on the original console fascia (I read somewhere that the console for a newer model would fit the older model but it would have a proper DIN width fitting, which should sort this out.

Also the sound just doesn't sound great, maybe I need to replace the speakers, any suggestions guys, I would like to get my wifes car sorted out before christmas.

Can I just purchase the new console and can someone confirm the part number for me, also that I have understood it correctly.

Yep, just purchase the fascia console, and din pocket from mazda, with the part no's posted on the first page of this thread, they will fit perfectly.

As for speakers, a decent 6" replacement for the front doors will get you started, the standard speakers are pretty average.

The bracket thingo is no longer available. It's not needed anyway.

Mine's been fine for 3 years now.

Can someone please verify the part numbers for the pre97 fascia, and pre97 dash pocket (not quite din width and height) I need to buy one to install an original stereo.

As well as the post97 centre fascia (proper din width and height pls)
