Most people will say idle speed controller, sounds more sinister than that to me.
Could with with a good clean out of the throttle body and probably CC.
Try a giving the thottle body a good cleanout with some carby cleaner.

IDENTICAL problem here bud! Did it this morning to be precise! once that first stall is over, and it warms up a bit, it runs perfectly!
Leads or plugs?

Yeh it's trying to get a reading upon startup, can't get one, and then goes into a default settings mode.

You think so Craig? Is there a fault code or way to test this theory?
Maybe i'll swap the oxy over from my dad NA6CE Auto, and see if it makes a difference?
I would have though plugs/leads for sure, something electrical and heat related?

yep definatly O2 sensor!
new one from mazda 400 something!
repco have a single wire one for 53 bucks i think it is!
all you have to do is reconect a wire and you are away
you can disconect the o2 sensor when cold and see if it makes a difference ie the car wont run in closed loop i think it is because it wont get a reading from the o2 sensor
it runs fine and doesn't stall with it disconnected
atleast it will find the problem to find the wire for the o2 sensor just follow the wire up from the extractors and there is a brown or grey plug to the drivers side of the injector pack at the back of the engine!

interrogate the ECU first: http://www.mx5club.org.nz/maintenance/e ... agnostics/
I'm skeptical about the O2 sensor, without it the car should run fine, just a little rich.

Back from the dead....
The dreaded cold start gremlin has resurfaced... this time slightly different to the last time.
No stalling at the first set of lights, just dismal cold start/idle upon startup.
Starts/cranks over fine, engine catches straight away, then starts to run with a miss, like she's running on 3 cylinders, and all the while running rich as fark, because you can smell the strong stench of unburnt fuel out of the exhaust!
She runs like this for about 5 mins at idle, or until she starts to warm up, then she drives like a dream, strong smooth, no problems.
Mods are a set of of Genie headers, and 14 advance, that's it. I replace the leads, and 02 sensor about 7 months ago, and this problem has only started since the onset of the cold Melbourne winter, about a month ago.
Suggestions?
