With advancement in batteries and small electric motors.....how long before this is a viable option?

Not while we are still running 12v electrics..

Yes they use 48 volt ones at the moment.

Only really able to help a bigger turbo spool at the moment.

There is no need for electric superchargers. The reason to run a supercharger over a turbo is to improve off throttle boost. e-turbos fix that issue whilst still using the highly efficient exhaust gasses as the main driver of the turbine. 90% of the time turbo's don't rob much of the engine of power to generate boost, with the electric aspect only keeping the turbine spinning for short periods of time.

A normal supercharger will pull around 50hp via the belt directly from the engine. Replacing that with an electric drive just makes the system less efficient, with the alternator requiring to pull 50hp from the engine to charge a battery that is delivering 40hp to the supercharger. Where is the benefit? The only good thing is you could driver the supercharger at a high speed at idle where as a belt drĂven system increases as revs increase.

I would have thought it would be easier to run. Regular turbo, and instead use an electric motor to directly drive the wheels.

Make the most of the instant torque etc rather than waste a good chunk of it compressing air etc.

Mercs seem to be a player also.
