So i was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a complete supercharger kit to suit the 1.6.
It consists of the following:
- SC12 Supercharger from a MR2 AW11
- Hot Side - Low mounting brackets to suit
- All piping (non-intercooled)
- Haltech E6K ECU and complete loom (Plug and play)
- there might be some more stuff but im not 100%

So i have a few questions i've searched both here and on Miataturbo.net and haven't received the answers to all my questions.
So hopefully you guys can help

1. Injectors - On the wiki it lists several injectors that can be used. My question is this besides the familia GTR/GTX are there any drop in injectors that i can use that are higher than 360cc where i don't have to add resistors or in anyway modify to get them to fit.
Essentially i want to take out the old, install the new reconnect them and done.

2. Fuel Pressure Reg - Should i get one and if so which would be the best bang for buck option. The reason i ask is that the car is now 20 years old and i plan on replacing with a walbro unit (as it is the most common and seems to be the simplest to install)

3. COPS - Should i bother going through and modding the ignitor and will it make much of a difference at 6 - 10psi?

4. Intercooler - I've spoken to a few people that suggested WMI but im not keen on this idea i was considering a small intercooler, like those used on the S13/VR4/R32 GTST - one of the small sidemounts would this be effective enough?

Rx8 injectors are 440cc and drop in. The e6x is pretty old though you might want to check its capable of the smaller pulse widths required as for memory it can't handle seq injection with out modding the CAS.

You may find a megasquirt would be a better option.

Why not just use the existing pump and reg unless it proves it can't cope.

More spark is always better and toyota units are cheaper then replacement mazda ones. But I'd get the rest up and running first.

So the RX8 injectors are a direct fit so un plug mine plug in the Rx8 and done? No need to mod the plug, or wire in resistors etc?

Ill stick with the ECU i have as since it was used to run it on the last car i can't justify buying the megasquirt (spending the $600) if this will do the job. if i saw a cheap one to suit a NA6 then yes but until then ill use the Haltech - its a E6K not E6X so its the model before the "X"

The existing pump is at least 20 years old now so its more a "just in case" kinda thing.

Cool ive got a modded ignition module, all set up for the COPS i just haven't got around to buying the coils and trying it on the car.

What injectors was on the car before? You really want to run exactly the same otherwise your going to have to retune.

A tune will cost you the same as a megasquirt and the megasquirt will be more capable and better self tuning.

The stock pump and reg work very well on low(ish) powered turbo cars so I can't really see a little blower needing more then that.

From what the seller tells me they are stock injectors.

So if the tune would cost me the same as a megasquirt why would i spend $600 on buying one? I can just as easily spend that money on adjusting the tune thats currently on the Haltech and save the remained (if any) for more mods.

Its a very capable unit so ill stick with it unless a ridiculously cheap MSPNP becomes available then i might consider it.

So perhaps with regard to the fuel pump and reg im worrying for nothing? i suppose i can just use it and see how i go at the very worst it dies on me and i have to get a tow.

Thanks for that, but from what i've been able to find the RX8 injectors - yellow top 420cc (that have been mentioned above) are a direct drop in replacement for my 230cc units so i think that i might just go for those since on ebay a reconditioned set is around the $200 shipped.

Initially i never considered supercharging the 5 - in fact i was more looking the path of ITBs. Not to make power and so on but because i love the sound.
but the kit came up at a unbelievable price and so i jumped on it feet first, time will tell if it was a good choice or not.

I will document it as much as i can and if there is interest ill make copies of the brackets used and if i can source a SC14 perhaps brackets for those. All this will depend on if i get it all working and im satisfied with the results.

Why do you want injectors bigger than 360? 4AGZE injectors are 365 and they work fine with a SC12, even with an intercooler and increased boost.

It's not what it can do on the spec sheet but how easy it is to use.

Did you know you can only connect to it with win 95 and older?

As I also said, a friend had an e6x and he couldn't run sequential injection with out cutting one of the trigger points off the cas as the haltec can't work out the two trigger pulses.

This means that if your going to run big injectors in semi sequential mode you need very small pulse widths at idle. The ecu has to be capable of controlling very small pulse width changes (which it may do).

A mega squirt will come with a heap of code preset for a mx5 which will make all your fiddling with idle etc easier and will allow VE based tuning which will be much easier.

The software also runs from windows so you can fiddle at home easier.

The software also records where you tune was out while you drive and allows you to apply the correction to the map very easily.

Ecus are one of the items that you really want to do properly the first time as the costs and time involved if you decide your not happy with often outweigh the "right now" solution.

Anyway... Call some haltec tuners and see if they will still tune a e6k (some probably keep old dos computers for that purpose) before you commit yourself. If your telling them it's already set up make sure you mention it will have 30% bigger injectors with completely different dead times.

Best of luck, should be fun when your done.

Yes i am aware it is only able to tune with 98 and lower, i've contacted my tuner who has had many years experience with this model and knows it quite well he has informed me that it will not be an issue to tune, but he wants me to print out the wiring diagram if i don't wire it myself so they can do it. I think ill install everything but leave the wiring to to them as im not very confidant when it comes to wiring.

Ben i dont want bigger injectors, true i dont need ones that are bigger than 360cc - However what i want is direct plug and play with the minimal fuss, i dont want to muck about tiwh resistors and the like.
I've actually found a set of GTX 360cc injectors and im waiting on the seller to respond.
However if i did find a set of the RX8 Injectors cheap being 420cc will allow me to up boost more and leave alot more head room for the fueling side of things.
I'm aware that im not going to get 200kws at the rears just by doing this but my goal is between 100kw - 125kw at the wheels.
Currently im on 72kw, so with the charger a good tune and with some luck i can make that happen.

I thought you said the ecu was plug and play? What else needs to be wired?

Also don't worry about adding resistors to injectors, that's just a way to use low impedance injectors. Just make sure the injectors you are getting are high impedance ones.

It is not "technically" a plug and play system like a Megasquirt is. But this was wired into a N!6 loom all i have to do is unplug the connectors on my engine and replace it with the loom supplied (i hope that makes more sense)

I'd rather not have to do any wire splicing as i dont trust my work - if its as i've been told remove old plugged in loom and replace it with the supplied one i should be fine.

Prepare for the worst but expect the best - time will tell i suppose

Injectors supplied with mine are 320cc I think and it was running 10psi. Rx8 injectors are more modern in design and I'm told very easy to tune.
I'm concerned about the size of my cooler and suspect that a s13 side mount will be a waste of time.
How do you plan to run your cooler piping, over or under radiator?

My whole Supercharger kit cost less than your Megasquirt haha - Bargain of the year for me.
I could go really stealthy and run a top mount since my carbon bonnet has that massive vent. but i dont think there would be enough space and there would be far too much heat soak to make it a viable option. So i guess ill mount it the same way the turbo boys do it.
