MX5 NC 'Flyin Miata' Supercharged - Help me pass emissions:)

Hi All,

I spoke to a gentleman in Melbourne regarding engineering my supercharged NC.

Basically, he was really helpful and said the only real hurdle is the emissions testing, which he could send me to over in South Melbourne.
However, he said if I can get my hands on a passed Emissions Test result/s for the same Flyin' Miata setup, then he would pass me based on that and the only thing he would judge is the workmanship and brakes test etc, which he thinks would be no issue.

Therefore, if someone knows someone or happens to have Pass results of an emissions test for the same kit - PLEASE can you let me know :) I will make it worth your while! He said it didn't matter which state, just needs a pass result.

Thank you all in anticipation :D

Tune your car to run on race blend E85 fuel, this will help you pass. Once the car passes then you can tune back to run on 98.

From a previous post: http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=706957#p706957
However if you do want to be 'legal' have the car tuned and tested on E85 put the certificate in the glove box then switch back to normal pump fuel. Whilst it has been established that E85 resulted in a 22% reduction in CO and 8% reduction in NOx emissions HC emissions increased by 12% (Haibo, Z, Frey, HC, Rouphail, NM, Gonçalves, GaA & Farias, TL 2009, 'Comparison of Flexible Fuel Vehicle and Life-Cycle Fuel Consumption and Emissions of Selected Pollutants and Greenhouse Gases for Ethanol 85 Versus Gasoline', Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (Air & Waste Management Association), vol. 59, no. 8, pp. 913-24) it is easier to reduce HC emissions through tuning than the other 2! The trade off for the reduced emissions was an increase in the amount of E85 over normal gasoline.

Magpie, thanks so much for the info - I will definitely look in to this if I can't get the emissions pass results from someone.

cheers

There are a handful of full engineered nc's in NSW.

Get in contact with Chris gough at targa racing as he was the one that got them engineered.

What sort of ECU is it running?

Remember, in Vic there are (or at least used to be, haven't checked for a while) some VERY tight rules regarding ECUs (EPA rules, not Vicroads)

Basically, programmable ECU = fail, regardless of if it passes a sniff test or not.

Make sure to check that, no point in tuning it to have legal emissions if they'll just fail it for the ECU anyway.

Goran, general concensus is that with a decent tune and a std exhaust system the NC will walk through the emissions test.
Suggest you book it in, make sure it's well warmed up for the test and give it a go.

Chris Gough has valid brake test data athat is valid for NSW but not sure if that will suffice for Vic.
Rules in NSW dictate a max increase in power output over std so we require a dyno test on a certified dyno as well

This is Victoria, so logic may not apply!
But, I've had a car engineered in Vic many years ago and it's all up to the confidence of the engineer.

Thank you all for your responses :-)

The engineer is quite confident there would be no issues with the stock exhaust and the ecu is standard (flashed).

I'll just have to take it for an emissions test ($650 a pop) and hope it passes... Also considering tuning to e85 then getting the emissions test done.

Still hoping someone can provide me with a passed test result which would mean (according to the engineer) I wouldn't need to get my car tested (as long as same kit and ecu).

Fingers crossed! :?

Wow. An emissions test in NSW is free... You just have to book about 6 weeks in advance

There are no S/c nc's that I know of in Vic apart from yours. Might be a bit hard to get the nsw emissions slip to comply with Vic regulations

Yeah, in Vic if you want to modify your car you pretty much need to have deep pockets.

Which is why the majority just modify illegally.

The engineer said regardless of state; he'd engineer my car as long as it had the stock ecu and same s/c kit...

Was really hoping someone in NSW would be happy to share their emissions report :(

Why don't you call Daniel Deckers or maybe even shoot a neilhr a PM.
I hope this doesn't start another ruckus. :frown: :frown:
