Before the dollar takes a real dive I’m looking at purchasing an entry level voodoo turbo kit for my NA model 1.6 MX5 1992. While I may go to the track occasionally I mainly just want more power on the street so will use the smaller 2554 turbo.

It runs stock injectors and fuel pump with the Voodoo piggy back and would probably use MSD boost retard (to get over idle/low end power problems) - no I/C as its only going to pull 6psi.

Has anyone got this setup? Seems very much like the old Greddy.

Alternatively can I pick up similar power with NA improvements (I already have CAI, Cobalt exhaust, lightened flywheel).

You are welcome to have a drive of Britney to feel a mild modded n/a 1600 - head work, extractors, 2"cat back and pod filter (around 70-75 RWK). Still stock inlet, cams and aussie factory computer.
Most of the oomph is in the head, but it is noticeable and fairly economic to do with a factory computer.

My previous NA6 had a turbo 1600. I purchased a 2nd hand set-up from Wollongong, being a stock motor with fabricated manifold, smallish turbo, 2.5"exhaust, stock inlet with bigger injectors and a factory computer that had been fiddled with and it blew through the air flow meter !!.
It produced good power, but had lots a drivability issues for road use, was not tunable and the blow through air flow meter was questionable. We then fitted an Autronic SMC computer with MAP sensor, requiring a throttle position sensor and alternate coil packs. This set-up was very drivable and produced a very healthy 135rwk and was a very quick package, except for some under bonnet heat problems. Engineering it for ACT rego cost a fair bit.

This set-up was transferred to Fanta and gave endless trouble on the track with excessive heat, breakages, etc and I reverted to a n/a 1600.

Fanta ended up a n/a 1600 with stock bottom end, Banyard head, Tighe cams, adjustable cam gears, extractors, 2.5" exhaust with no cat, bigger injectors and Autronic SMC computer with a red line of 8,400 rpm. Fanta came in at around 95 RWK and was very lively, but needed the Autronic and a fair bit of tuning to get right. That set-up would have made a very quick road car and was very drivable ( not cammy).

So from my experience, unless you want to go to an aftermarket computer and engineering, a good head and possibly mild cams should give you a noticeable improvement for the lowest cost.
If you want to spend the money then forced induction is fantastic, but the cost can escalate quickly - ask Malcolm about his experiences.

Of course there is the US kit to fit a 6 litre alloy chev !!!!

I don't like the idea of a non intercooled turbo set-up - I'm sure some will disagree, but you need to have such low boost it'll be a very minor improvement.

I'd buy a local kit (eg AVO) that comes pre certified and saves you a bunch of cash and trouble in the long run.

Even for low boost I'd want to run an intercooler. They don't have to be expensive, I'd save money on the turbo (good manifold and down pipe) & use a good condition 2nd hand unit. My s15 turbo was cheap and has been trouble free!

Have got a setup now with intercooler...
