Can i turn the boost up?

Postby james_p93 » Sun Jan 20, 2013 4:15 pm

hey!

i have a SE and just came into possetion of some 320cc injectors ( thanks simon!) . i havent installed them as i just got them yesterday. i have the boost turned up to its max, just before it hits boost cut. these injectors give me like 50cc ish more. whch is around 20% more. does this mean i can turn the boost up 20% more? currently on 9.5psi ( not exactly sure, getting a boost guage soon).
i have stock ecu, pretty much stock everything..
thanks in advance!!

NO! Not without a wideband and det cans.

Get some proper advice please.

haha ok thanks :) yea getting a wideband soon hopefully, what is a det cans?
what do you mean by proper advise?? if u mean go into a shop and ask people that do it for a living, im a little sceptical of everything they say. the goal of this forum to to share info and the goal of a shop is to make money... essentially. so i know which i would trust more.

If you don't know what you are doing (or are not confident), seek professional help.
OR
I can say 'yeah, crank the boost' and when your motor pings itself to bits, you only have yourself to blame.

Excuse my bluntness but I think this will help you the most.

Start by googling the information the forum gives you you dont understand. Although people like me, Sean, and many others here can walk you through it all step by step, the magic of google means that we dont have to, we just need to give you a path to follow.

If google doesnt work come back and ask specifics. we just wont have the patience to spoon feed everything to you, we have better things to do.

As for shops and their ability to be full of it sometimes, thats true, its hard to know who is being honest.

You want to search around and over at the MSM forum about what the stock ecu and timing map can handle in terms of boost on the stock ecu. Im sure a few of them have tried rising rate fuel pressure regulators and will know the answer.

Dont let the tone of this post stop you from asking anyone or even me questions, Im glad to be able to help, but you have to do some work yourself.

You need a wideband ASAP if you want to do wacky stuff like try to run different injectors off the stock ECU. Theoretically it should run richer and allow more boost but I don't know how much and things can go south very quickly if it leans out. Det cans are basically headphones connected to your knock sensor they allow you to listen for detonation (pre-ignition). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_knocking

Also your ECU has no idea you changed the injectors so you will still hit boost cut at the same point (when the map sensor tells it you have hit a certain pressure) you need to modify that signal somehow to fool the ECU into seeing a lower pressure than you have, this can result in the ECU not holding the injectors open as long which may or may not be compensated for by the larger flow rate of the new injectors... Clear as mud?

These guys are just trying to help you out learning a bit more about fuel injection is a lot easier than rebuilding engines.
WARI the software for the adaptronic ECU has an SE basemap included if you want to play around with it.
http://adaptronic.com.au/files/Select_R ... _Setup.exe

As for the ECU I mentioned in the other post it's a megasquirt 2.2. You can also download the software from their site and play around with it, various maps are posted in the forums.
http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/indexright.htm

It is a full standalone that will run everything but you should have a read through the manual
It will have to be wired in but if you can find a standard ECU and harvest the female end of the loom plug I will make an adaptor for it.

Like reply to this thread with blunt responses? The guy is brand new to mx5s and I think cars in general..

James, the standard ecu has a standard locked map which works within certain parameters which it receives from the factory settings. You either need to change the information its getting from those sensors or upgrade to either a piggyback unit or a complete replacement ECU for example a megasquirt. Others are available but are not typically plug and play and usually require some form of cutting the factory wires to suit.

I am sure there will be others here who will help or have more information

James,
was that your SE at MX5 Plus last Saturday?
Some 'bruising' on pass side?

Probably best to talk to the 'Plus' guys.
Lots of info on SE (MSM) upgrade path here http://www.mazda-speed.com/forum2/index.php
and here http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/MSM_upgrades.php

It is a well trodden path - you just need to read some more and make decisions on how far and how much $
and how much you want to orientate the car towards DD, Road, Track or just traffic light racer.

Happy to help, come along to any Bris Club day, or Track day for more one on one info.

I'm playing around with a different AFM with a goal of supporting more flow on the OE ECU. The standard FS1E AFM tops out pretty easily.

Perhaps you didnt read my post fully, I said that people will not spoon feed the entire process to him, and its true.

If he asks for bites of info and follows the research path we send him on he will get all the way there, if he asks for his hand held the entire way the forum will get sick of it a third of the way through and he will be left at the hands of a shop somewhere. This was honest and serious advice. If you want to get something achieved without being at the mercy of others you need to do some of your own research, if you are chasing that info through the internet you will need to learn to google.

Or he can ask for a guide, follow the links and google the terms hes not sure about, and whatever he doesnt understand or know where to find, he comes back, asks THAT question and repeats the cycle, after a week or so the forum can tell him if they think he has the knowledge and understanding to do the mods, or buy the parts etc.

This is how it works on efficient modification forums like MT.net, and fact is, its the only way that this works everytime, without people blowing up cars or spending tonnes of cash.
