Well it's finally done!

We have cleared the final hurdles to become one of Australia’s only legal, registered & insured Supercharged MX5′s. We are all very proud of this milestone which started at the end of September 2012 with an emissions test – More details here.
The IM240 emissions test is the equivalent of the Euro 3 Emissions Standard. The process of achieving a successful result requires sampling (emissions) at different speeds and temperature in order to simulate real-word driving conditions. The Euro 3 regulations are incredibly stringent however we where confident that our custom tune would pass the test without issue (which it did!). My perfect tune was custom built by myself & Jay utilising a data logger and countless hours of on-road testing. Thanks to TDR Tuning.



The next step required for my car was to be tested for it’s braking performance now that it had significantly more power. The brake test involved almost 20 COMPLETE (0 km/h) stops from highway speeds in quick succession (no more than 45 seconds break between each brake – pun intended). We had to get permission from the local highway patrol to use this public road for the test. The factory NC brake system is phenomenal. Again, we passed this test without issue. A weigh-in and a Dyno run completed the engineering requirements before all the results where submitted for review. The engineering company responsible for reviewing the data took only a few days to assess our efforts. This resulted in the delivery of an engineering certificate making my Supercharged MX5 RTA legal!

This engineering feat would not have been possible without Chris Gough at Targa Racing and Jay’s precision tuning at TDR Tuning. My sincerest gratitude to you both.

I have to ask...WTF was the point of the brake test? The car could have 500bhp but it aint going to affect how well it stops on the freeway.

Was going to say the same thing though its prob a good thing they only require you to cruise then jump on the brakes as opposed to going flat stick to desired speed then jumping on brakes..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that now mean you can almost pre certify other cars of the same make and model with the same mods>?

As far as im aware - emissions test, dyno and weighbridge would still need to be done because they are car specific. However the brake test is not necessary.

As far as im aware - emissions test, dyno and weighbridge would still need to be done because they are car specific. However the brake test is not necessary.

Fair call, I thought the new engineeringm system did away with those requirements assuming same make/model would be the same.

I believe that's when the same company installs and engineers the setup though.
IE: the certification requirements can be called upon by the same engineer/workshop as a precedence but only if they use the same certification number. Kind of like cetain importers using the previous (original) test on a particular car (let's say a 180sx) over and over again on the compliancing certificate.

For a different engineer, I'm not sure if they can call on other engineering companies previous certifications hence the requirement for dyno, emissions, etc. I think that loophole has been closed.

Sounds like still a long and painful process.
Only valid for NSW registered cars, as each State varies in requirements (Victoria is considered impossible).

Yeah that's the one I meant. I thought it was considerably more open now?
Not that I have an NC, or a need to use the rule, just my curious mind.

Just had SC installed and also working with Jay from TDR. He's tuning my car at 4am his time, and then waiting up to find out how it went! Well, first tune and it's beautiful. So smooth to drive. Great trims, timing and AFR. Permanent grin lol.
